Jayden shook his head quickly. The second he asked, the trust would be shattered. Everything they'd tried to rebuild since Beatrice would just... Poof.

Chester grabbed his hand. ‘Love, please? I won’t get mad, I promise,’ he said softly. ‘You didn’t get mad at me every time I’ve dropped bombshells. I’m sure this can’t be that bad,’

Jayden paused, burying his face in his hands. "I was thinking, that you're only ashamed when you're dating man. Which is me. So, if you had to choose between me or a pretty woman with no Beatrice-level flaws, you'd probably choose the girl." Jayden said all of this in a rush, hoping that it was too quiet and too loud for Chester to hear.

Chester rubbed the back of Jayden’s hand, not speaking for a few moments. ‘Love, you’re not someone I can throw away that easily,’ he said quietly, bringing up his spare hand and running it through his hair. ‘If I ever did that, I’d be the stupidest man on earth. You’re the most amazing, kind, beautiful person I’ve ever met.’

Jayden leaned into his touch, looking Chester in the eye to try and see any sign of a lie. He didn't see one. He smiled weakly. "Okay."

Chester gave a small smile back, playing with his hair. ‘I don’t care about my grandparents respecting me if it means I get to be with you. I don’t ever want you to feel so worthless.’

Jayden went quiet before giving him a tight hug.

Chester hugged him back, burying his face in his hair. He rubbed his back and relaxed, hoping he’d made it better. ‘I love you. I’ve never been ashamed of you, my love. Just myself.’

Jayden wasn't sure he believed that. If you're ashamed of yourself for being with me you might as well be ashamed of me.

Chester noticed the look on his face and looked down.

Jayden sighed, pulling away.

Chester let him, fidgeting with his hands. ‘You think I’m ashamed of you.’

Jayden didn't answer, looking down.

Chester grabbed his hand and kissed the back of it. ‘I don’t know what it’ll take for you to believe me, love. I’ve never been ashamed of you.’

"Just ashamed of what you're doing with me." Jayden muttered.
