Hazel started down the path, looking down at her shoes as she walked. She was quiet.
-
Theo squeezed her hand to try and comfort her. "Hazel-nut, what happened?"
-
Hazel didn’t laugh at the pet name, like she usually would. ‘He gave me this whole lecture about how this was a bad idea, and that if we broke up there’d be no avoiding you for the next few weeks,’ she mumbled, then sniffed. ‘Then he set all these stupid rules we have to follow otherwise there’ll be “consequences”.’ She used finger quotes for the last word.
-
Theo frowned. "What kind of rules?" He asked. "How easily breakable are they?"
-
‘Well, we have the keep the bedroom door open, and we have to sleep in seperate beds from now on-‘ she cut herself off. He must’ve looked inside her room at some point. Again.
Hazel gritted her teeth. ‘And we can’t kiss in front of the little kids, which I don’t think we were doing anyway.’ -
"I mean, we're not trying to. It's not our fault they keep breaking in and seeing us." Theo sighed. "Either way those rules are stupid."
-
‘I agree. But what about the consequences?’ Hazel asked. She wiped her eyes.
-
"What about the consequences?" Theo asked. "Are they nearly as bad and weird as the rules?"
-
‘I don’t know. He said he’d break us up or something.’
-
Theo's eyes widened. "Well we're not going to break up." He muttered. "No matter what your dad says. We'll just be more careful, I suppose."
-
‘Alright,’ Hazel sighed.
-
Cohen was walking faster, eavesdropping a bit. "Alright, we're almost at the school."
Theo nodded, stopping Hazel and wiping her eyes before kissing her quickly. "Lilla didn't see that, did she?" He joked half halfheartedly. "Don't want to break the rules already." -
Hazel blushed slightly. She smiled weakly and shook her head. ‘I don’t think so,’ she said with a small chuckle.
-
Theo gave a small smile. "Phew, that's a relief." He offered her his hand, walking again.
-
Hazel took his hand, smiling softly.
