"Will you stop talking back?!" Hazel's dad snapped before semi-collecting himself. "At least a few ground rules: You two sleep in your own beds, your door always has to be open, and no kissing in front of the kids, they'll make it a thing. And any rule breaking means you'll have to be broken up." His face showed that'd be the best offer she'd get.
Theo heard him snap from the kitchen and frowned. -
‘Hey, that’s not fair!’ Hazel exclaimed, ignoring the part about stopping talking back. ‘You can’t just break us up, it’s my choice! And they’ve already made it a thing!’
-
"Those are the rules! No arguing, take it or leave it!" He yelled. "It's either you accept those rules, or face the consequences!"
-
Hazel’s eyes welled with tears, the inescapable feeling that came when arguing with a parent. ‘What consequences?!’ Hazel exclaimed, matching his tone of voice.
-
"I break you up immediately!" He snapped. "Now stop talking back unless you want me to take back my offer!"
Theo could hear the muffled shouting more and more as it progressed. He finished his toast and walked to the door. Cohen tried to stop him, not wanting the two of them to get into more trouble. -
Hazel scoffed. ‘You can’t do that! It’s my choice who I date, not yours!’ she shouted.
-
Theo opened the door. "It's too early to start shouting at each other." He said frankly. "Me and Hazel have to go, anyways."
Hazel's dad glared at him, then at Hazel. "Fine, go to school." He said angrily. -
Hazel glared at her father before storming out of the study. Tyron and Lilla were standing on the steps. ‘Hazel? Why were you arguing with daddy?’ Tyron asked.
Cohen grimaced. -
"Because we didn't eat our vegetables." Theo said, knowing it was a lie, but also hoping it'd keep them from asking. He noticed Hazel was close to crying and grabbed her hand, wanting to make her feel better. "You ok?" He asked quietly, already knowing the answer.
-
‘No,’ Hazel mumbled. She grabbed her bag and stuffed the things she needed inside of it, refusing to look him in the eye. ‘Did you… did you hear our argument?’
-
"Just the muffled yelling, but I'm worried anyway." He put his shoes on. Cohen opened the door outside.
-
‘Good,’ Hazel said quietly. She walked towards the door.
-
Theo grabbed Hazel's shoulder gently. "Want to tell me about it?" He asked, concerned.
-
‘Not really. But you should know, I guess,’ Hazel mumbled. ‘C’mon, let’s get to school.’
-
Theo nodded, walking out the door, shutting it once Hazel passed.
