Jonah's eyebrows raised again. "No way, really? Why?"

"they saw my picture in the elementary school yearbook when my mom still tried to keep me in public school. They didn't know what was up with my face either." Valako said

"And they decided that was good enough to make a story out of it?" He asked, disgusted with the story.

"yeah, they told me I'd be famous for it but I didn't want to. It made me feel like more of a spectacle than a person y'know?" Valako said

Jonah nodded. "Makes sense. I'd do the same thing."

"I'm glad you think so too. My mom ragged on me for it saying it would've gotten us a lot of money." Valako said

"Sometimes the money isn't worth it, especially when it's something like that."

"my mom said if I was this ugly anyway it didn't matter." Valako said

Jonah's jaw dropped when he heard that. "She said that? To her own daughter?" He said. His dad could be a tad bit rude at times, but he couldn't even imagine his father saying something like that.

"she says stuff like that all the time. I don't mind though, it's not like she's lying." Valako said, looking at the leaves in the trees. She was thinking about autumn as she watched the breeze push the trees

"Hey, don't listen to that kinda stuff." Jonah said, frowning. "You're beautiful."

"I know how I look." Valako said

"Well you're beautiful to me." Jonah whispered.

"thank you for saying that." Valako said. She started rubbing the skin where her eye would be. She knew no one else would ever think she was beautiful. Not with her face.

Jonah gave a small smile. "No problem." He said quietly.
