"so they just left?" he asks rhetorically, thinking outloud to try and comprehend the situation. "why?" "and what the flying fish is Aramoor?"
-
'It's a town west of Ephery,' Echo responded. 'And she used a strange phrasing - fleeing Ephery. She could've said leaving, but she chose fleeing. They were running away from something.'
-
"but what?" "does it say anything else?" "how did the new people living here not see this?" he starts spewing questions, overwhelmed with the news. his family hadn't been killed or taken away. they had left him.
-
Echo slipped her hand into his, trying to comfort him. 'Maybe they were told not to,' she suggested gently. 'We'll figure it out.'
-
"if they were fleeing, why would they leave one of their kids behind?" "they obviously didn't care about me enough to go look for me." he turns away. "maybe we shouldn't look for them."
-
'Maybe they were forced to go? Or they couldn't wait?' Echo stepped forward so she could face him, still squeezing his hand.
-
"if they had to leave so quickly, they how would my mother have time to write this note?"
-
Echo couldn't think of a good response that would comfort him, so she just hugged him instead. 'Aramoor isn't too far from here. Do you want to find them?'
-
"i don't know," "i, i really don't know."
-
Echo kissed him on the cheek. 'Just tell me when you do know, then. For now we should get out of this room, it smells.'
-
"where should we stay?" "it's getting pretty late so we should find a place to sleep."
-
'Not sure,' Echo said, climbing out of the trapdoor. 'Some kind of hotel, like we did in... Lonebrook, was it?'
-
"i don't even know," he shakes his head, trying to remember the name of the town. "ok, let's get out of here." he pockets the contents of the shoebox and then helps Echo climb out
-
Once they were both out of the underground room, Echo shut the trapdoor and stood up. 'So, where to?'
-
"right this way milady," he gestures right across the street and a bit to the left at a rickety old building with a sign saying "Ephery Olden Inn". "emphasis on olden," he laughs, walking toward it. "they're pretty cheap, i used to go there once in a while."
