"the family?" "i think they're probably still here..." "they were when we first left. and people in this town don't tend to leave without it being the hottest gossip of the century."
-
'Let's still check,' she said stubbornly.
(I might disappear every once in a while cos of homework, for a top of 15 mins) -
(i have to leave bc sleep time)
"ok, fine." he gives in, leading her to his childhood home. an upper middle class house with the front yard overgrown and childrens toys strewn about. "at least it hasn't been forgotten." -
Echo picked up a toy bear that had been discarded on the path then looked up at the large house. 'You lived here?' she asked, noting the overgrown garden and the dirtstained door in her head.
-
"well it looked a bit different back then," he laughs, cringing at how poorly his childhood home was being taken care of.
-
Echo chuckled. 'Shall we knock on the door?' She stood in front of the worn brown door. There were cracks in the wood and the bronze doorknob looked rusted and old.
-
"i suppose..." he doesn't move. just stands on the front porch, staring at the door
-
Echo glanced at him before knocking three times on the wood. There wasn't a metal knocker.
After a moment, the door opened to reveal a young woman. -
"hello? did you two need something?" she asks, confused
Heath freezes, not knowing what to do or say. what had they come here for anyway? could these people provide information? -
'We're house inspectors,' Echo said convincingly, grabbing a book from her satchel and holding it the way important people do. 'Here to check the safety of your house, ma'am.'
-
"you don't seem like house inspectors..." she states, "females don't get jobs. and you two are very dirty."
-
Echo tried not to seem to angry at that statement. 'All part of the job, miss,' she said in what she hoped was a cheerful voice, 'I'm an intern.'
-
"oh. it must be one of those new-age things. i never trust people who are a part of that." she looks Echo and Heath up and down, and says "leave the bags outside, i don't want y'all stealing things."
-
'It's our job, miss, to remove anything unsafe,' Echo said, 'Boss'll be mad at us if we keep our valuable... work things outside for some street urchin to steal.' "Street urchin" felt wrong in her mouth, especially because Heath was sort of one.
-
"what are these 'valuable work things'?" "sounds suspicious..." she glares at Echo
