Sienna looked her up and down taking in her dark brown hair with pink highlights. The fringe that covered most of her forehead and her deep brown eyes. Sienna smiled. "Fine. I won't go either"
-
She glanced at her. 'Course you won't,' she muttered, putting her earplugs and phone in her pocket, then glanced back at Sienna. 'Why're you still here? Do you need something?' she said.
-
"If you're not going too school-I won't either. I don't know anyone and you're the only person I've spoke too so far. Oh and have I told you I got expelled from the last two schools I've been too?" Sienna retorted.
-
The corner of Maya's mouth twitched. 'I've been expelled from three,' she said, sighing. 'And suspended 12 times.'
She put her hands in her pockets, looking out into the river. -
"I've been suspended 13 times." "Beat you!" Sienna laughed.
It was true, Sienna had been expelled twice and suspended 13 times but it wasn't her fault. She had serve anxiety and had family problems. She only saw her Mum once a month with her social worker. Her Dad-well she had no idea who or where he was. -
Maya smiled, not looking at her.
She'd been expelled for defending herself from bullies, even though they'd hurt her more. The bullies had made fun of her for having two dads, loving all school subjects, spending lunchtimes on her own, being a demiboy. She was called a weirdo and a nerd. She'd been to a therapist twice for barely talking. She got in trouble for listening to music in class. She hated all of it. -
Sienna felt a tightness in her chest and her body began too tingle, then too shake. "No, not now" she whispered too herself. Her breathing got shaky and she was now on her knees clutching a tree for comfort.
Since she was diagnosed with anxiety she had been having unexpected panic attacks, and now she was having one when she was trying to make a friend. Fat chance of that happening now. -
'Are you OK?' Maya turned to Sienna. But she knew it was a panic attack. She'd had them herself a bunch of times, but they had become limited when she started high school. She had suspected it was because nobody had helped her, and to avoid being made fun of she had stopped.
She rubbed Sienna's back, whispering, 'You're OK,' over and over. It was all she ever wanted when it happened to her. Someone to comfort her. -
After a while it stopped and Sienna turned to Maya tears in her eyes.. "I'm sorry. Thanks. Sorry, I'm so so sorry!" Sienna sobbed hands covering her wet face.
-
Maya chewed the inside of her mouth. 'Why?' she said with a small smile. 'You don't need to be.'
-
"But, but I made a complete fool of myself! It's stupid, nothing scary even happened to trigger my anxiety! It just randomly happens, I can't help it-I'm sorry" Sienna lifted her head, finally there eyes met.
-
Maya sat down on a rock, beckoning Sienna to sit next to her. When she did, Maya explained how she had anxiety, and how she'd have four every week. She explained how they slowly went away because she kept telling herself that she was being stupid, and that Sienna didn't have to think it was stupid or she was going crazy.
-
"Thank you. My mum tries to support me, but nobody really understands, except from you I mean" Sienna lay down-resting her head on Maya's shoulder. "Thanks" she repeated
-
Maya had never really been touched on this kind of way before. She had never really had a friend, so Sienna's words surprised her. She rested her head on top of Sienna's, not knowing what else to do.
-
Sienna smiled. Neither of them spoke for a while but she was pretty sure she had made her first friend.
