Maya glanced up the sudden silence. The teacher had walked in. Everyone scurried back into their seats, and Maya hastily put her sketchbook back in her bag.
'Where's Sienna?' the teacher asked, looking to Maya.
'She went to.. uhh... Do something for another teacher, do you want me to go get her for you?' Maya said, making something up on the spot.
'Yes, please,' the teacher said, and Maya left the classroom. She ran outside, looking at Sienna, who was yelling at some boys.
Maya had heard the words demiboy and emo goth girl, so she figured it can't have been good. -
Sienna whipped round sensing somebody's presence. Maya.
"Hey" she stated then turned back round too the boys who were making fun of her.
"Laugh all you want, but it's not funny, the only funny thing here is your face" she retorted aiming specially at the guy who had been mean too Maya.
He stopped short. "Did you just call me ugly?" he towered over Sienna by a long way, edging closer towards her.
"Y, yeah" she stuttered realising what she had put herself into too. -
Maya swore. Loudly. They stepped in front of Sienna and punched the guy in the face. He stumbled backwards, touching his nose.
'Wha-' he muttered, staring at Maya. They glared back him.
'Stay away,' Maya snapped at him. 'If you tell, I'll know.' They didn't usually make threats, but this boy and his friends had crossed the line. -
Sienna looked gratefully at Maya. "Thank you so much!"
"You probably just saved my life" she chuckled. -
Maya glanced at Sienna, then at the boys. The group stumbled away, exchanging whispers.
'Are you OK?'
'I think my nose is broken!'
'I never knew girls could be so agressive...'
'Demiboy, you mean. Who knows what she'll do if she catches you saying that again!'
Maya sighed, looking back to Sienna. 'Sorry,' they muttered, fiddling with their hoodie strings. 'I don't usually get so aggressive, especially not at school.' -
Sienna gave a sad smile. "There's nothing too be sorry for" she replied giving Maya a hug.

Maya flinched at the hug. They weren't used to being touched like this, and it gave Maya a strange feeling in the stomach. Not even their own parents gave them hugs that often, nonetheless a classmate.
Not a classmate, a friend.
Despite Sienna being her friend, Maya squirmed out of the hug awkwardly. 'Sorry, I don't do... hugs,' she muttered, glancing at Sienna with an apologetic look on her face. -
Sienna pulled away cheeks reddening. "Sorry, I didn't realise..." she cut off.

'That's OK,' Maya mumbled, then quickly changed the subject. 'We should probably get back to class. The teacher wanted me to look for you, as she'd noticed you were gone,' she said.

Sienna swore. "Great" she said sarcastically. "I bet I'm the only person in the human world too get a detention on their first day, in the first five minutes of the day!"

Maya smiled at that. 'I told her you were doing a job for another teacher. Miss Bowen is easy to suck up to, so you won't get in trouble.'
She started walking to the classroom. 'Even if you do get detention, I've got detention too,' she added. She didn't mention what it was for, though. -
Sienna's forehead creased thinking hard as too how Maya had got detention but knew not too ask. She entered the classroom, following Maya.

The class turned at the noise of the door opening, then looked back to the teacher. Maya sat back in her seat at the back of the classroom, pulling out her copy of Little Women again.

Sienna went up too Miss Bowen's desk and smiled at her approving Maya's excuse, before sitting down next too her friend and continuing reading Little Women. "Sorry" she whispered.
(I did right something similar before so I don't know why it's gone!) -
'For what?' Maya whispered, eyes glued to the page she definitely wasn't reading.
