"Nick, why would you try to jump? From where?" The prince gasped. He reached for Nick's face and pulled it toward him. "What's the matter, love?"
Dream frowned, biting his lip. "From the roof of our building. He was upset about ... you. After Schlatt's anouncement, he was afraid you were dead!" -
Nick couldn't answer. He just sobbed even more. I'm so dumb, I'm so f**king dumb-
-
Karl frowned. "Nick, sweetie, please. Tell me what's wrong. I love you and worry about you." He wiped the other's tears away as best as he could.
Dream whimpered. "Nick... Please. Listen to me. We need to tell them. But I'm here and can help you explain." -
"I- I'm worthless, I'm just a burden. I keep causing problems o-over and over again. I- I'm a t-terrible person a-and brother. I'm a-annoying and a bu-burden-" Nick broke off and sobbed, and started to collapse.
"No!" George noticed Nick about to fall and took a step forward to catch the boy. -
Karl gasped. "No, sweetheart, listen. You aren't a burden. I swear. I love you, Nick. Trust me on this. You may be annoying sometimes but that doesn't change anything. We all care about you." He started crying himself and looked over at Dream. "How long?"
Dream glanced at Nick then moved closer to Karl. "A while. He told me that these feelings have been going on for a while." -
"Y-Years..." Nick said quietly.
George's eyes widened and he held Nick upright. "Years!? How many years!?"
"I...Um...5" Nick whispered -
Karl gasped. "Why? Why so long? What happened to the old Nick? Tho one I knew before?"
Dream frowned. "He told me that before." -
Nick flinched and wouldn't meet anyone's eyes. "Every since...ever since Dad, everything felt h-hopeless- I feel like I'm a- a burden. I feel like I'm hurting Dream so f**king much...A-And then when I thought you...when I thought you were..." Nick collapsed, sobbing.
"Oh F**K-" George tried to hold him up but couldn't. "Look kid, you're not a burden. You never have been. In fact, we all probably need you now more than ever-" -
Karl glanced up at Dream, then down at Nick. "George is right. You are not a burden. We all need you, love. I hate what happened to you because of Schlatt and all the stuff he pulled. But we all need you. You are valuable. Not a burden." He whispered, reaching for Nick once more.
Dream shook his head sadly. "Nicky, I've told you before that you haven't hurt me. Never have. I love you. You're my brother! Why would I push you away now?" He asked, fighting back the tears. -
"But I- I-" Nick's exhaustion showed. He looked up from his place on the floor at Karl. He weakly reached up but basically couldn't.
George looked over at Dream sadly. -
Dream shook his head. "Nick, don't. We need to rest, both of us. Especially you. But ... We can't stay here, can we?" He asked, glancing between George and Karl. At the same time he tried to pick Nick up.
Karl shrugged. "I don't think anyone else is coming down so you guys should be fine to stay right there." He looked over at George. "Would that be okay?" -
Nick's eyes widened and he flinched away from Dream. It took him a moment to realize that he wasn't going to hurt him. He shook slightly and was doing his best not to cry anymore.
"I'm not sure...I feel like we'd have a better chance of escaping-" George said sarcastically. -
Dream paused. "Hold on. We might be able to get you put, Karl. I've picked locks before. Just ..." He frowned, checking his jacket for anything to use for lockpicks. Or even the picks themselves. With a laugh he found the small case and pulled it out of his pocket. "I can use these."
Karl frowned. "Are you sure you guys want to do this? I don't want to make it harder for you." He leaned against the door and sighed. "But I would like to be out." -
Nick, though no one realized, fell asleep against the bars of the cell.
"I think it'd work...Actually, Dream let's do it-" George said excitedly. -
Dream chuckled, standing and taking a pick out. "I've never done a cell though. This might take a while. How long do I have?" He asked, trying his best to not break his pick.
Karl shrugged. "Maybe a few hours. I don't keep track of the gaurds schedule down here."
