Ander stood up, the chair grating against the wooden floor. He reached for the door handle, carefully pulling it open so it wouldn't creak. An evening breeze drifted through, causing the trees to sway gently. Fireflies began to glow and twinkl like a thousand stars and the world was quiet. It could have been peaceful for another man less wary.
-
Kenna smiled as her eyes glazed around, reflecting the lights if the glowing bugs. "It's beautiful out here," she whispered, as if the slightest noise would break the peace it held.
-
Ander leaned against the doorframe, watching her with an unreadable expression. "It is, isn't it? Nights like these, I can almost forget the rest of the world exists. Just me and the forest."
-
Kenna nodded. "That's a nice thought," she said. She looked over at Ander standing in the doorway, and for a reason she didn't understand, she felt the urge to grin at him. She didn't fight it. A huge smile came over her face.
"Shall we go see the horses?" she asked. -
"Yeah," Ander said with a nod, shifting so he was supporting his own weight before chuckling when he saw her face. "What? Why are you looking at me like that?"
-
Rasia realized she had a big goofy grin on her face and immediately dropped the expression. After a moment, she said, "I don't know." She paused for another second, then said, "Maybe because I was having a terrifying night and you managed to make it cheery."
-
Ander raised an eyebrow before a genuine smile appeared on his face. "I've never really thought of myself as a cheery sort of person, but I'm glad you're happy. You have a nice smile. I wouldn't mind seeing it more often." He immediately cringed. "Sorry, that sounded wrong. I'm not the best at talking to people. Especially, well, nevermind." And now he was rambling. At this point, Ander was ready to melt through the floor from mortification. He sighed, rubbing his eyes. God, he was tired. "Let's just go see the horses, shall we?"
-
Kenna let out a small laugh. She vaguely gestured outward with her arm. "Lead the way," she said.
-
"With pleasure." Ander wanted to light a lantern, but decided against it. Lighting one would be like a beacon to all sorts of unkindly things, even though he'd like to have it to see where he was going with more ease. Maybe he would have done it if he'd been alone, but he had Kenna to worry about now. Kenna...
How was he supposed to feel about this strange girl? If she was her target, why did he have the urge to protect her? Why couldn't he bring himself to claim her life, as he had claimed many others? And if she was a friend...well, that would be far more complicated. It could be treason to Linnus.
Ander nearly stumbled over a tree root, cursing himself for not paying attention. It was dangerous out here and not a time for moonlight pondering. "Watch your step," he said, holding out a hand to help her over the root. -

That was the hundredth post)
"Thanks," Kenna said as she took his hand and stepped over the root. It was a simple action on his part, but very meaningful to her. Granted, she was one who tried to find the symbolism in everything. But still. She was grateful to him, he had saved her, a complete stranger, likely from death, but that wasn't the only reason she enjoyed his company. He was courteous, sometimes astoundingly so, also someone she found she could have great conversations with. She felt as if she could trust him no matter what, and that he would keep his promises. She could tell he was troubled, but everyone had their own crosses to bear. It might just be that his are heavier.
"Is it very far?" she asked. -
YOOOO NICE πππ))
We must celebrate with cake π))
Kenna's hand was pleasantly warm in his, but he quickly released it once she was safely over the root. He bit the inside of his cheek, pensive. He hoped the darkness would hide the curious look he gave her, before quickly shifting his gaze. It had been a long time since another person had willingly touched him before. Typically when another person touched him, it was a cold handshake or a pat on the back after an affirmed kill. Or the desperate grapple of a dying person, clinging on to life as the light faded from their eyes...
A horse snort startled him back to his senses. He could almost hear his mentor's disapproving hiss for allowing himself to be so easily distracted. "We're here," Ander said softly, his quiet tone mingling with the gentle hum of the forest.
A brilliant white stallion tossed his head, fixing Kenna under his intelligent and accusatory stare. A rather squat gray mare shifted anxiously, apparently on edge. -
A big grin came to Kenna's face. "Whoa..." she said under her breath. Pictures didn't do them justice.
-
"They're really something, huh?" Ander ran his hand down the side of the white horse's muzzle and the impressive beast snorted softly, although he began to stomp his hooves in agitation. He head-butted Ander's shoulder, ears flicked back.
Ander frowned, feeling slightly on edge. "They're not usually like this. Maybe they're just spooked by a newcomer," he said casually, but his heart was racing. He had been trained to never believe in coincidences. He glanced around briefly, tensing up as he saw a window cracked slightly open, a spot in a nearby haypile that was dented from weight, and less dusty spots around it. Not something any normal, ordinary person would notice or care about. But then again, Ander Tuliso was far from normal.
His heart felt like it was crawling up into his throat, drumming loudly. We're not alone. He started to speak, his voice much calmer than his nerves. "Maybe we should head-"
He was broken off by the sight of a throwing knife soaring at his face. He managed to jerk away just as it embedded in the wooden wall, vibrating from impact. -
Kenna brought her hand to her mouth in a gasp. Her other hand gripping her cane more tightly. She whipped around to see who had thrown it. Had they been aiming at her and missed? She wanted to run. But she knew she was only able to speed walk.
