Creatures of the night rustled in the undergrowth as Regal charged through, his white pelt glistening in the moonlight. He was certainly not a creature of stealth, but Ander knew that the stallion's intelligence was a rarity among beasts. "You good back there?" he yelled over the wind.
-
"Yeah," Kenna said, not shifting her attention away from the dark scenes flying past them.
-
"Good, because-" He was sharply cut off by an electric beam blasting through a passing tree, leaving a smoking hole sizzling in the middle. Poor aim or a warning shot. Knowing the kinds of people that would bother coming after him, it was likely the latter. Still, he couldn't afford to stop. A rider in dark clothing was pursuing them from behind, a gun held at ready.
-
Kenna let out a startled gasp at the sudden hole in the tree. She held on to Ander even tighter as she looked behind them to see a person in dark clothing chasing them. She quickly turned back around, hoping and praying with all her might that they wouldn't die right there.
-
The next blast passed just over head, so close that Ander thought it might singe his hair off. He managed to duck in time and it hit another tree, sending chunks of bark flying like shrapnel. He threw back a knife, watching it whizz past the dark figure. The rider grabbed it before it could hit, still hot on the tail. Ander cursed under his breath, urging the horse to go faster. He unsheathed his sword, hitting a young sapling right through its center. The force of it nearly ripped him off of the horse, but he succeeded in his mission. The sapling toppled down, landing directly in the rider's face. It knocked them off of the horse, which still chased after them. Once it realized its rider was left cursing in the undergrowth, it gave up chase and turned back.
-
Kenna looked back again to see the person fading away behind them. She let out a shaky sigh of relief. "That was close," she said quietly.
-
"Too close." Ander's expression was not one of relief like Kenna's, but one of deep concern. He briefly glanced back at the fallen rider before turning to face forward, the dark shapes of the forest flying past them. How did they find us? He frowned thoughtfully, riding in silence until he spotted an oddly shaped tree he recognized. "We're close."
-
Kenna nodded, wondering how often he had come this way that he knew exactly where he was going. Granted, she had the feeling he wouldn't go much of anywhere without knowing what path he was taking.
-
At first, there was nothing. Just the dark forest before them, chittering with creatures of the night. Then, the air before them rippled. As they passed through, a warm feeling washed over them and enveloped them, and the entire scene before them changed. Instead of darkness, there was a cosy little cottage with lights strung about. The tantalizing scent of a freshly baked pie wafted from the windows, which emitted a warm light. Music and the sound of a dog's bark could be heard. Once the small group had passed through the invisible barrier, the music immediately shut off. Whoever, or whatever was occupying this house seemed to be aware of their presence.
-
Kenna had peeked above Ander's shoulder as they'd passed through the barrier, wondering what the warm feeling rushing by was, but saw no substance as they passed through it. She saw a little house, looking comfortable and inviting, but watched as the snug environment changed to a dark and cold one. She wondered who was so scared of intruders.

Moonlight glinted off of the back of a metal beast, trotting closer and closer. It burst into a gallop, but Regal didn't seem to be bothered. The robotic creature tackled Ander off the horse and...was wagging its tail? The dog was whining happily, licking his face. Ander laughed, his cheek dripping with oil. "Ugh, gross! Crypta, it's me!"
A girl poked her head out of the small house, grease stains and scorch marks marring her apron. The lights flickered back on and the girl's face lit up, rushing over to Ander with a squeal of delight. "Andy!" She threw her arms around him the instant he stood up, nearly toppling him over again. She quickly dabbed the oil off of his face as the metal dog barked around their legs. -
Regal had stopped when Ander was thrown off the horse by some metal creature. She let out a squeak of surprise as it flew past her and sent Ander to the ground.
Kenna looked at him with a concerned look until he started laughing. For a moment she was confused. Had he bumped his head too hard? But then he summoned the owner of the cottage out and discovered that they seemed to be very close friends.
"So that's where you got the nickname from," she commented as she watched the two of them with a smile. -
Ander smiled at her, patting the dog's head. For the first time, the other two seemed aware of her. Crypta looked at Kenna in surprise, holding out her head. "I'm Crypta. You must be-"
The dog growled, its eyes glowing. It ran a scan down Kenna, its expression vicious. The scan shut off with a beep. "Intruder detected."
"She's a friend," Ander said, patting the robotic dog on the head. Its demeanor changed entirely, from beast to pet. A tongue lolled out, dripping oil. Nosing over to Kenna's hand, it looked up at her. "Name and voice identification, required." -
(She's stuck on top of a tall horse how can Robo touch her hand?)
Kenna stared at the robotic dog in confusion at its sudden transformation in demeanor for a moment before realizing that it had spoken to her. "Oh, uh, Kenna. My name's Kenna." -
Hind leggie))
A whirring sound came from the dog's head, before its eyes flashed green. "New friend identified. Hello, Kenna," it answered in its clipped, robotic tone. Crypta sighed, crossing her arms and looking at the dog. "I'll have to work on Robo's speech later. It's too unnatural."
"I sort of prefer it that way. Reminds me who I'm talking to," Ander said, offering a hand to help Kenna down. "Crypta, this is Kenna. She's a...friend. Kenna, this is my friend Crypta. We were both trainees at the same facility, but in different sections. She was engineering."
Crypta smiled awkwardly, fidgeting with her thick leather gloves as she did so. She had friendly brown eyes and oddly coloured hair, which had hints of brown and auburn but wasn't quite either, with faint streaks of blonde here and there. Her skin was a pleasant olive color, marred in a few places by burn marks. Overall, she seemed a bit like a stained glass window. Unusual for certain, but all the more likable because of it.
"Oh, do you wanna go inside? I just made a pie. I love making pies almost as much as I love inventing. Almost," she grinned.
