"Okay okay okay," Lauren said quickly, raising her hands up in surrender. "No food."
She wondered, what if she could love him the same way she had when she was an 11-year-old girl? -
"H - Hold on! Do you have mint? If you do, can - can I have some? Please? It might help?" Echo felt a strange pull at their heart. What was this feeling?
-
"Um, maybe?" she said and began digging through her pockets. She remembered a few years ago she always used to keep mints in her pockets, but she had fallen out of the habit.
"Aha!" she said, pulling out the red and white candy. -
Echo smiled. "Thank you!!" They knew the mint would help. It always did. They unwrapped it and popped it in their mouth. They sucked on the candy quietly and smiled again.
-
Lauren couldn't help but smile at the expression on his face.
"Do you feel better?" she asked. -
Echo nodded, not trusting their voice to speak. They waited for Lauren to do something. Walk away. most likely.
-
"Where do you live?" she asked. She figured he couldn't be living in his old house.
-
Echo frowned. "WHY DOES IT MATTER? YOU DON'T NEED TO KNOW!" They spoke harshly.
-
Lauren tensed up. "I w-was just - just concerned," she said.
-
"WHY? NO ONE CARES ABOUT US. WE'RE USELESS." Echo snarled, grabbing their knife.
-
Lauren swallowed. "I care," she said softly and honestly.
-
Echo gasped. "YOU CARE?" They asked, their knife clattering to the ground.
-
Lauren let out an inaudible sigh of relief when he dropped the knife, then nodded.
-
"WHY?" They were barely able to force the question out. Tears welled up in their eyes and they coughed weakly.
-
"I don't like seeing others in pain," Lauren said. "And no one deserves what you've gone through."
