"Alrighty, we're here!" Vivian said after a few moments. She headed inside, guiding Oliver in with her.
-
Oliver was greeted with the pleasant smell of old and new books as they walked in, warmth enveloping them as a bell tinkled merrily to announce their arrival. It had a cozy and relaxed atmosphere, like a warm hug from someone you cared about.
-
Vivian smiled as she walked in, guiding Oliver through the rows and rows of bookshelves. ``Do you want to walk around with me as I look for the book? If not, I can guide you to this little reading nook with comfy chairs to sit in.``
-
The thought of being alone in an unfamiliar place, even if it was pleasant, did not strike a particular pretty note in Oliver's heart.
"I guess I'll come with you, I might be able to help you find it," he said with a seemingly indifferent and calm shrug. -
``M'kay,`` Vivian said with a nod, walking down one of the rows. She hummed as she scanned them, looking through the different books that rested on the shelves.
-
Oliver picked up books at random, asking if they were the ones she wanted and trying his best to put them back where they came from.
-
``Stay here for a moment, I'm gonna ask the librarian if he knows where it is,`` Vivian said, letting go of Oliver's hand and starting to walk off. ``Just call me if you need anything, I'm just over near the front of the store.``
Vivian walked off and a girl sitting at a table nearby stood, walking over to him. ``Hello,`` she said in a sickeningly sweet voice, tapping his shoulder. -
Oliver nodded and Vivian was gone before he knew it. He felt terribly alone, until he heard footsteps, which was even worse. He jumped when someone tapped his shoulder. The feminine voice that greeted him sounded uncomfortably like the sorts of girls he tried to avoid.
"Hi," he said, clasping his hands to keep them from shaking. -
``You need help looking for a book?`` The girl asked, brushing strands of hair out of her face and tucking them behind her ear.
-
Oliver, being blind, could not see any of this which made it a little less unnerving to speak to her. "Uh, yeah. I'm trying to help a friend of mine out." Friend. The word felt strange in his mouth, but acquaintance was too long of a word and he couldn't think of any other word to describe Vivian.
-
``Well, maybe I could help you,`` she said with a smirk on her face, putting a hand on his arm.
-
Oliver flinched away from her touch, shifting his arm so her hand fell away. "I don't even know what I'm looking for, but thanks," he said, using the shelves to try and guide himself over to Vivian.
-
``Well, why don't I help you find some books?`` The girl suggested, walking over to Oliver. She grabbed his wrist, squeezing it enough to apply pressure and slight pain. ``I'm sure you'll love the choices.``
Vivian made her way back over to Oliver, spotting the girl. A slight twinge of, what jealousy? Anger? Whatever it was, she didn't like it. She walked over, a smile on her face. ``Hello.``
The girl looked over, letting out a short, amused laugh when she saw Vivian. ``Well, look what we have here. Disabled freaks.``
``Back off.``
``And why should I?``
Vivian smiled and set her book down before grabbing the girl's free arm and pinning it behind her back, pushing it back and applying pressure. It was like wrestling with her siblings, yet completely different. The girl yelped and let go of Oliver, backing away. ``S-Stay away from me, f--king freak!``
``Gladly,`` Vivian said with a smile, watching the girl huff and stomp off. She looked over to Oliver, worry plastered across her face. ``Are you okay, Oliver?`` -
Oliver had tried to twist out of the girl's grasp, but she was surprisingly strong. Panic started to bubble up in his chest. This was one of his worst fears. He heard Vivian's voice and a strange sense of relief flooding through him. The girl said something that caught his attention. Disabled freaks? As far as he knew, he was the only one who was disabled. He heard the sound of a scuffle and then an alarmed shriek as the pressure on his wrist was removed.
It was all over as quickly as it started, leaving Oliver to do nothing but lean back on one of the shelves, feeling ashamed of himself for freezing in fear.
"I'm fine," he said, waving his hand dismissively. "What did she mean by "disabled freaks"?" -
``Not sure,`` Vivian said hesitantly, staying by Oliver's side. ``Maybe uh, maybe you misheard her.``
