"Hm," her father said as he watched her serve the food for the two of them. "And what if by this slim chance you do get chosen?"
Adrienne faltered. She had no idea. "I - I don't know," she said quietly.
"You do have the option of refusing him," he said.
"But you - "
"I'll be fine," her dad said. "It's what you want."
Adrienne frowned. She knew why he had wanted her to try in the first place. Her father was ill. The doctors couldn't do anything about it and he was slowly dying. He only had a few years left. He had wanted to make sure she was taken care of when he wasn't there anymore. -
``Well, she seems very nice,`` Callum's father said with a smile, standing from his chair. ``I'll make contact with her and let her know she's been chosen.``
Callum smiled, nodding. He walked out of his father's option, opening the door. -
A few days later the four girls were just messing around after a sleepover.
Adrienne's dog, Ruffian, started barking at the door.
Adrienne let out a groan. "What now?" she asked her German Shepherd.
The other three girls laughed at the dog's tendencies to bark at very nefarious leaves. Adrienne opened the door to show him that there was nothing to be barking at when she saw the mailman standing on the other side of her screen door.
"Oh hey," she said. "Ruffian, move." She was trying to open the door, but her large dog was getting in the way.
The mailman smiled in amusement as Adrienne was finally able to take her mail.
"Thanks," Adrienne said before closing the door.
She filed through the mail. Advertisements, random stuff, letter from Uncle Maverick, a letter from the king addressed to her?
Adrienne slowly set down the other mail.
"What is it?" Samantha asked.
"Wait it has the royal crest on the envelope!" Megan said a little loudly. The three of them immediately started chattering about what it could possibly be.
"Hold on let me read it first," Adrienne said.
(Can you put the letter?) -
``Dear, Adrienne Willow,`` the letter read, ``The royal Woods family is very glad to inform you that you have been chosen by Prince Callum Woods to be the future bride and queen of Conad Kingdom. You and any guests you'd like to bring shall be treated to stay at the castle, treated with a personal chauffeur bringing you and your guests back to the castle. We hope that you choose to accept, and would like to be the prince's bride.``
-
There was a moment of complete silence after Adrienne read it. Then all of a sudden Emily, Megan, and Sam all started squealing at once and rushing over to her.
Adrienne just stood there in complete shock. She had no idea what to do.
"Adrienne?" Emily asked when she realized that she wasn't sharing their reaction.
Adrienne swallowed. "I - I don't know," she said. -
Callum sat in his room, smiling gleefully.
``Wow, you sure are happy,`` Jeremy said with a chuckle, sitting down in Callum's swivel chair at his desk.
``I am,`` he said, turning on his side and looking over to his friend.
``So, what's the lucky girl like?`` He asked, spinning in the chair.
``She's super nice, really funny, has a great personality from what I've seen,`` Callum said with a smile, sitting up.
``Is she hot?``
``Well, yes, I guess you could say that, but that's not what's important-``
``Aye, that's my boy, Gettin' all the hotties.`` Jeremy said jokingly. -
The three other girls stopped in their cheering.
"What is it?" Samantha asked.
"I barely know this guy," Adrienne said. "I've literally only had one conversation with him." Even though she felt like she had seen him before, she only knew of the one conversation they had had.
"And you don't know if you're willing to spend the rest of your life with someone you hardly know," Megan finished.
Adrienne nodded.
"What if you write a letter saying no and if it doesn't feel right trash it and say yes?" Samantha suggested.
Adrienne cocked her head. "That's an idea." -
``Do you think Adrienne will say yes?`` Callum asked, standing up and slowly beginning to pace the room. ``I really hope she does. Oh, what if she doesn't? She could just say no and I'll never see her again and then I'll either end up alone or with some stuck up prissy girl-``
``Callum, chill dude,`` Jeremy said with a chuckle, grabbing Callum's arm and stopping his pacing. ``I'm sure she'll say yes. I mean, it'd be a dumb choice not to. You'd be a great husband for her.`` -
Adrienne immediately sat down at her desk and started writing a rejection letter, stating why she didn't want to accept.
But as she read through it, it really just didn't seem right. She thought of Callum and she could imagine his heart being crushed, or maybe even hers.
She trashed it.
"I'm going to do it," she said quietly. Emily overheard and told the others. Adrienne started writing her letter of acceptance. -
``Think about it. She's probably not going to want to accept, especially since we've barely even talked-``
``But what if she does accept? Ever thought about that?`` Jeremy said, staring at Callum.
He rolled his eyes, walking back over to his bed and sitting down. ``I know. I'm just.. freaking out. And worried. I mean, she seems really nice. God, I seriously hope I don't f--k things up. What if I do?!``
Jeremy chuckled, shaking his head. -
For some reason as Adrienne was writing her letter she felt like she was signing her life away and she didn't know how she felt about it. She had never planned for this. Never in her life had she thought that this would ever happen.
Multiple failed drafts later Adrienne was finally satisfied with her letter. She stuck it in an envelope and sealed it.
She walked downstairs into the kitchen where her dad was. She showed him the letter she had received earlier. When he finished reading it he looked up at her, a question in his eyes.
"I'm going to do it," Adrienne said. "I'm going to accept. I'm going to take the letter to the post office right now."
She turned to leave the kitchen, but before she left the room her dad asked, "Do you really want this?"
She turned back to face him. "I'm not entirely sure," she said honestly. "But I know if I want I can back out."
Adrienne then walked out of the kitchen and towards the front door. She paused whrn.she got there. Why did she feel so scared. She took a breath of persistence and walked out the door to her car. She then drove off to the post office. -
``Listen, I can completely guarantee that you won't screw things up,`` Jeremy said, crossing his arms. ``I mean, it's not like you could do any worse damage than I could. I mean, do you remember my last relationship? Train. Wreck.``
Callum chuckled, remembering clearly all the failed attempt of Jeremy trying to win over his soon-to-be girlfriend, but failing miserably. ``Yeah, I can't possibly do worse.``
``See? So trust me, you'll be fine.`` Jeremy said, smiling.
``Yeah. Everything will be fine,`` Callum said to himself, nodding. -
Adrienne took a deep breath and returned back to her house. Her three friends had gone home already.
A few days later, the letter arrived at the castle. -
``Callum! The letter's here!``
Callum perked up, turning around in his chair. ``Really? Come in!`` He said with a smile as his sister walked into the room, holding an envelope/
``Yup,`` she replied, handing the envelope over to Callum. He smiled and carefully tore it open, not wanting to ruin the note inside. He unfolded the paper and quickly read through it, a smile growing on his face.
``She accepted,`` he said in slight shock and pure joy, looking up at Adelaide.
``Really? That's great!`` Adi responded, hugging her brother.
``This- This is so surreal.`` Callum said to himself as he read the note over again. He traced the letters that were cleanly marked onto the paper, smiling about how he'd see Adrienne once more. -
The letter basically said that after thinking long and hard she had decided to accept, and that she and her father would await the vehicle being sent.
Adrienne smiled at the thought of Callum. She remembered thinking he was going to be a stuck-up brat, but he was quite the opposite.
But for some reason she felt like she had met him before, not just seeing him in a picture. She knew that wasn't likely, but that was what she was wondering about.
