They carried on in silence for some time until Chuck pulled in at their destination. Christmas thanked Chuck, who pressed his business card and a granola bar into his hands.
"If yer ever in a sticky spot, you call Chuck. Alright?" Chuck said, winking as if he was letting Christmas in on a big secret.
"Sure," Christmas said with a smile. "Thanks, Chuck."
"Now ye take good care of your leetle gal an' travel safe," Chuck added. "Folks gets more nasty in the dark an' all." -
Sophia wrapped her arms around herself. "Where are we?" she asked, looking up at Christmas.
-
Christmas was about to retort that Sophia was not "his leetle gal" but Chuck had already zoomed off back toward the city after receiving payment.
"Closer to a friend," Christmas replied. "I couldn't risk having Chuck pull up right in front of the house, so we'll be walking a little." -
She nodded in understanding then started walking next to him, letting him lead the way.
-
It was still raining, which meant they were getting soaked pretty fast. Christmas took off his jacket and lifted it up over Sophia's head to shield her from the elements.
-
"Winter was always described as white and frozen," Sophia said as she looked around. "This seems hardly white."
-
"Not yet," Christmas said, shaking his head to try to get some of the rain off. "But before you know it, it's going to be snowing hard."
-
"Oh," was all she said.
-
The outline of a house began to appear in the distance, filling Christmas with relief. "Now you're going to want to be careful," he warned Sophia. "This guy is pretty strict."
-
"Okay," Sophia said. She was sure she could handle it.
-
Christmas rapped on the door and a grumpy, squat little old man answered the door. He had tufts of gray hair hidden under a brown hat, cloudy blue eyes magnified by thick glasses, and generally looked like a compressed potato with human features.
"Whaddya want?" he snapped, squinting at Christmas's face.
"I hate to come without calling, but we need a place to lay low for a while," Christmas said loudly, as the man was hard of hearing. "Could we stay here for a piece?"
The man grunted and waved for them to come on in. -
Sophia followed Chrismas inside, glad to feel the warmth around her.
-
-
The house was odd, to put it simply. Various ornaments and trinkets dangled, sat, or otherwise rolled around in the house which was clean and arranged in some oddly specific order that would have been difficult to find out.
The old man stepped into the kitchen and placed a batch of banana bread out to cool before walking back over to them.
"What have you kids gotten up to now?" he huffed, peering at Sophia with curiosity and judgment. -
Sophia blinked. Were they going to tell him the truth or not? She decided to just leave Christmas to the talking.
