"Go ahead, it's safe," Christmas said. "It's going to rain soon, we don't want to get caught in that."
-
Sophia looked at him then got into the car. She waited for Christmas to get in to, because she sure wasn't going alone.
-
Christmas closed the door and got in as the driver hit the gas and zoomed off. He started to suspect that their taxi driver didn't have a license when they began to fly past the speed limit. The faster the better, he supposed.
-
Sophia didn't like how fast they were going. Since she had only ridden in a car once before, she was more prone to car sickness.
-
-
Christmas noticed Sophia's expression of distress and tapped the driver's shoulder. "Could you please slow down a little?"
The driver shrugged. "I figure that y'all wanted to get to yer destination faster. But I can slow down a little bit if y'all want. It is Christmas, anyhow." -
Sophia nodded a thanks. She could feel her insides start to settle down a little. She leaned back in her seat.
-
"One good thing about leaving the city is the lack of Christmas puns I'm going to get," Christmas said with a laugh, turning to Sophia. "Have you ever celebrated Christmas?"
-
"No," Sophia answered simply.
-
"Your first Christmas," he said with a sigh. "Pity that it has to go like this."
The driver decided that this was the perfect time to launch into his life story and told them his name: Chuck Grumby. He talked on and on. He was a very friendly sort of guy but my word, did he talk a lot.
"An' that's how I figured out that our dog, Bones, was actually a coyote an' not a stray mutt or some sorts. He was nice an' tame though, didn't give me any o' that sass that them things give you. He was a good ol' fella though. Loyal as a coyote could come." -
Sophia wasn't exactly sure what a coyote was, but she figured it was similar enough to a dog that this man got the two species mixed up.
"Why do some people call you Chris?" she asked him. -
"Because that's what I say my name is," Christmas said, settling down in the seat as Chuck dove into an entirely new story about how he found a moth the size of his hand in his closet once.
"A name like Christmas can get you made fun of and it's a piece of the past I don't like to dig up," he said, running his hand through his hair. -
Sophia nodded in understanding. Being the namesake of a holiday must be terribly confusing! "Do you want me to call you Chris?"
-
Christmas thought it over for a second. "No," he said. "It's time for me to embrace it."
-
"Okay," she said.
