"I was actually wondering if you could take care of Pat," Christmas said. "I'm more than willing to pay."
Mrs. Rhubarb chuckled heartily. "My dear boy, you really think I'd take your money from you? No, keep it. I refuse. The kids adore your dog anyway so it'd be my pleasure."
A chubby baby tapped against Sophia's legs, wanting to be picked up. -
Sophia looked down at the child. She didn't understand the gestures being made to her so she looked back up.
Sophia's gray eyes were slightly widened and her breath was somewhat, but unnoticeably unsteady. She had never been in such close proximity with so much activity it made her a little nervous. -
Christmas recognized what the baby wanted and lifted her up, letting her curl her fingers in his hair, tugging at it and playing with it. He saw the anxiety in Sophia's eyes and took her hand, giving it a comforting squeeze before letting go.
"Are you sure, ma'am?" he said to Mrs. Rhubarb. "I'd be more than happy to pay."
She nodded. "I'm entirely sure. He's in good hands, I promise."
The kids bounced up and down delightedly. Most seemed to be under ten, a few looked to be in teenaged years. The older children lifted Pat out of the reach of the countless hands that longed to pet him.
"I'll miss you," Christmas said to his dog, petting him affectionately. Pat nuzzled Christmas's face before the latter stood up.
"Let's go," he murmured to Sophia. -
She nodded and followed Christmas. As they left the house Sophia let out a breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding.
-
"Are you alright? You seemed a little nervous back there," Christmas said, searching Sophia's face.
-
"I'm uhhh just...not used to it," she said, trying to find the words.
-
Christmas nodded in understanding. "It must have been overwhelming for you," he concluded before his face paled. "How long has it been since the phone call?"
-
"Well you packed and then we dropped Pat off," Sophia said. "How long would that usually take?"
-
"About fifteen minutes," Christmas said. "We have forty five minutes to get out of here before the whole city is at our heels."
-
(I'd say half an hour is more realistic but whatever)
Sophia knew he wasn't exaggerating. So she started following Christmas. -
I was thinking around the same, but they weren't awfully long in doing things, so maybe like 20 minutes or so? Actually nvm packing could take a while))
Christmas pushed the door to the stairs open, flying down the steps and pausing every so often to see if Sophia was caught up. He pushed the door open and wrapped a coat around her.
"Just keep your head low and don't draw any attention," Christmas said in a low voice. "The people around here aren't the nicest." -
"O-okay," Sophia said quietly and did what Christmas said to a t.
-
Christmas managed to wave over a taxi and whispered an address to the driver before opening the door for Sophia. The skies began to darken ominously.
-
Sophia didn't know what was going on. Why was there a stranger in a yellow car? Where was he going? Why did they trust him to take them there?
