"Oh," Sophia said. She saw that Pat could tell something was wrong, somehow. She rubbed his fur.
-
Pat whined anxiously, his head snapping from side to side in an attempt to keep his eyes on both at the same time. Christmas sighed.
"I know Mrs. Rhubarb would take care of him for me," he said sadly, rubbing the dog's ears. "Although he doesn't like kids." -
Sophia gave a single low laugh. "We need to hurry," she said quietly.
-
Christmas nodded and finished packing, sliding his backpack onto his shoulders and handing Sophia hers. Pat titled his head confusedly at them, his tail no longer wagging.
-
Sophia put the pack on then bent down next to Pat. "I'm going to miss you," she said quietly to the dog. She had never said that to any living thing before.
-
Pat licked Sophia's face as soon as she came in reach, his tail wagging as his little nubby feet stretched as high as they could go. Christmas watched the bittersweet scene before his eyes began to mist and he blinked, looking away.
"Let's go." -
Sophia stood up and followed Christmas
-
Christmas walked until he reached a door decorated with festive holiday decorations, all clearly homemade and most made by the hands of children. He rapped at the door and it was almost instantly thrown open by about five kids at once.
"Chris!" they cheered. "Ma, look it's Chris!"
A kindly looking woman with a floury apron came to the door. "Goodness, Chris is that you? Who's your lovely new friend?" -
Sohpia furrowed her eyebrows in confusion until she realized that Chris was Christmas. She decided to have him answer the questions unless one was directed towards her.
-
"This is Sophia," Christmas said formally before Mrs. Rhubarb wrapped Sophie in a motherly embrace, pulling away and beaming at her.
"Welcome to the family!" she said as the woolly headed kids swarmed around her, asking her questions all at once.
"Who are you?" "Are you Chris's girlfriend?" "Can I call you Aunt Sophie?" "How old are you?" "Where are you from?" -
Sophia blinked at the sudden attention she was getting.
That hug she had just gotten, she had never felt anything like that before. She had never known her mother, and there had never been a mother figure in her life. -
Mrs. Rhubarb waved her hands in a shooing manner to her children. "Haven't I taught you kids any manners?" she scolded, although her tone and expression were both good-humored. The kids sheepishly smiled as their mother turned back to the two.
"Why don't you two come inside? It's awfully cold out here and I'm sure all the kids will want to say hello," the woman chuckled. -
'All the kids?' Sophia mouthed to Christmas in surprise
-
'She has eight at home, two at college' Christmas mouthed back with a grin.
The kids herded them into the house, all demanding attentions and bringing out their finest trinkets and prizes to impress their guests. Mrs. Rhubarb began to cook something for them as the children petted Pat delightedly. The dog seemed to rather enjoy it.
"So are you two going on a trip?" Mrs. Rhubarb inquired pleasantly. "I see that you've packed." -
"We'll be leaving soon," Sophia answered, without answering the actual question
