Oliver had an unreadable expression on his face. "Hannah, did you hear anything last night?"
Hannah nodded. "I did. I heard our maid cleaning and I heard some lady getting out of bed. I can't tell if it was my mom or Nina." -
"But you said that your maid was home sick," Imogen said.
-
"I did," Hannah said thoughtfully. "I wonder what she was doing there..."
Oliver looked as though he had been electrocuted. "Cleaning," he said, his eyes wide. "Cleaning, if she was cleaning the curtains, she could have taken them down and..."
Hannah's eyes became big and fearful. "Curtains! She was cleaning curtains!" -
"I see," Imogen said. "Where is your maid now?"
-
Hannah was practically in hysterics. Oliver picked her up and she wrapped her tiny arms around his neck, crying.
"She's at the police station. Let's go." -
"Alright," Imogen said.
-
Oliver carried the girl out, the cat at his heels. The police looked shocked and raced over to ask questions, but Oliver pushed them aside.
"It's the maid," he said. "I'll explain later." -
It seemed too easy, Imogen thought. [/i]Just one encounter with the girl, and we know who it is? Surely it can't be this simple. It's never this simple.[/i]
-
(*sigh* You're too smart)
Hannah buried her face in Oliver's shoulder. Oliver felt as if something was slightly off, however. A missing link. If the maid did it, where was Nina and Lesley? -
(Why thank you.)
Imogen walked over to the car, and opened the back door for Hannah. Then she sat in the passenger side. -
Oliver turned to Imogen with a thoughtful expression on his face. "If the maid really was home sick, then someone was pretending to be the maid."
-
Imogen nodded. "Will the maid at the station be the actual maid or the fake one?"
-
"Hannah, I hope, will be able to shed some light on that," Oliver said. "And there's always DNA tests."
-
"True," Imogen said. Then a thought came to her. "Mrs. Minst posing as the maid?"
-
"Maybe. But I want to keep an open mind about the matter," Oliver replied.
