Claire walked into the lab and saw Caroline working on the time machine. "Mom got another shift at work. So she told me to order a pizza." Claire sighed, picking up her phone. "What do you want on yours?" Claire asked.
-
"Oh. Um, I don't care you choose." Caroline said, only briefly looking up from her work. So many numbers and equations to do. If any of it went wrong they could be pulled out of their timeline forever or cease to exist. The possibilities were endless. Caroline continued to scribble furiously on her paper, only looking up once again at her sister. "Are you sure we should do this?" She asked, waving a hand at the time machine.
-
"How many dinners has mom missed?" Claire asked. "How many birthdays? How many award ceremonies? Honestly, if we win the Nobel Prize for this time machine... She probably won't notice unless she watches it on the news." Claire sighed. "I've never been more sure of anything in my life." She added, dealing the pizza number. "Yes. I would like two root beers and two Hawaiian pizzas. Hold the pineapple." Claire told the guy at the phone.
-
"Oh wait! Actually, I do kind of want pineapple now." Caroline said quickly. She leaned back from her work and, spotting her cat nearby, picked him up and put him in her lap. "Fair point." She muttered, her thoughts returning to their mother. Would their mother ever recognize that she had two daughters? No. "So how long do you think until we're ready?"
-
"I don't know." Claire sighed. "We'll need a power source. If we use lightning that might fry the engine. Mom would kill us if we tried to buy Radium again." Claire sighed. She realized she was still on the phone with the now very confused pizza man and hung up.
-
"At least she might pay us some attention that way." Caroline muttered, stroking her cat. "Well then maybe we should just try, um, I don't know. Maybe we should try taking the power source from somewhere else." She blurted out, "Like from a power plant." Now that the idea was out in the open, Caroline cringed. But things were getting desperate.
-
"I have a better idea. We can use the van batteries. Mom never uses it anyway. She uses the family car." Claire told Caroline.
-
*company car. Not family.)
-
"Right," Caroline said, relieved. "We're so close to being done. I've made all the calculations and I'm fairly certain we will not be ripped into a million pieces." So there was still an chance of that happening, but only a 10% chance. "I'll go make a salad then, to go with that pizza."
-
Claire smiled. She got a call from their father and frowned. He abondoned them 18 years ago... What does he want now? "Hello?" Claire asked. "Honey, is your mom there?" Her dad asked. "No. And don't call me honey." Claire replied. "Can you tell me what she changed her phone number to this time at least?" Her father asked. "No. But I can tell you her email. NotInaMilionYears@IDon'tCare.No." Claire replied, hanging up. Her dad had left their mother after she gave birth because he was ready for a child but not twins. Ever since they were ten he's been trying to get back together with mom so she often changed her phone number or email. So her father would go to Claire a lot because Claire was his favorite. But she wasn't taking it anymore. He would probably try asking Caroline now.
-
"Who was that?" asked Caroline, frowning. She set her cat on the ground and started leading Claire up to the kitchen.
