With the end of Arithmancy came the teacher hurriedly assigning the homework, helping a student or two with a question, and then finally, the professor let everyone leave. Jasper didn't often need help in the class, since it was all theoretical math, and so he got a chance to leave early while the teacher helped the others. He was making his way to potions class, checking the satchel of books that he carried to make sure that he had the one he needed for potions, and for the homework that he'd done the night before. Once he was sure he had everything, he soon arrived to the class, and since he was one of the first few here he ended up sitting at an empty table. He expected that the other Slytherins would be there soon enough, anyway, so he didn't mind waiting.
-
Milo made it to class early enough for there to still be a variety of seats, and immediately crossed the room to Jasper's table. If the boy tried to shoo him away, he could always sit with students at another table. Or those in the other house. Whatever it was.
"Hey, mind if I sit here?" he asked, more as greeting than as an actual question. Before the other could answer, he was sitting next to him, trying to find something to write with. Milo, upon learning that he would need quills for Hogwarts, had immediately attempted to learn how to use them. Almost as quickly, he failed and vowed that he would never use one unless necessary. Sure, it was nice for aesthetic purposes, but who actually had time to use a dip pen in class? Instead, the muggleborn brought with him an impressive array of his favorite gel pens, which were much faster to write with and had a similar effect on their paper. Now, he managed to quickly find one of these pens, glad he'd brought them with him. -
Jasper almost groaned when, of course, the next person to show up to the class and take a seat right next to him happened to be Milo. "I suppose I can't stop you. Especially since you keep finding me wherever I go." He had to admit that he wasn't too suprised that he and Milo had the same Potions class, as there were mostly Slytherins in this particular class hour, besides about five Ravenclaws. He glanced over at the other, watching him as he seemed to be looking for something. His heart practically leaped when the guy pulled out, no joke, some gel pens. Which just so happened to be a thing that Jasper loved as a kid, when his parents bought him a few to color things with. Still, he held back his excitement. "That's a little odd. Don't you write with a quill?"
-
"They're impossible to write with, and I never used them in Salem. Besides, I have really light handwriting so gel pens work way better than ballpoints for me. Unfortunately, I don't have any brightly colored ones on me..." he frowned, reaching for one of his books. Maybe his parents would send him some, assuming they'd figure out how to write to him quickly enough. He was glad that Jasper didn't try to force him away, even if his greasing wasn't exactly the most welcoming. It was nice to know that at least one of the Slytherins was warming up to him. Suddenly, he realized that the question could have been a mocking one. "Why?" he asked, looking over at the other boy.
-
While Milo had been talking, Jasper was getting his own books and papers out of his bag. His small potions book, tattered from use, and the two pages of homework from the night before. They didn't get as much book work in this class as they did in others, but last night they'd been assigned to analyze their potion from yesterday. Other students had started to arrive, taking their seats, along with the professor who started to get things ready and settled at his desk and all of the potion stations. He looked over at Milo when he was asked why, and shrugged. "Just wondering. I haven't seen someone using them for a while."
-
"You can borrow some, if you ever need to," he replied, looking at the other boy's textbook and sheets of homework. He purchased a used book for the class, but still, it was nowhere near as... appreciated as that one obviously had been. Then his eyes slid over to the homework, causing him to realize that he had no idea what they were currently doing in the class. Noticing that the professor was now at the front of the room and preparing for their lesson, Milo decided to go introduce himself to the professor and ask what was going on. "Uh, what's our teacher's name?" he asked Jasper quietly.
-
"No, I'm fine," Jasper said, still trying to stay steadfast in his resolution to not use muggle things, no matter if gel pens were kind of nice. "The professor, that's Slughorn. You'll know him really well soon enough, because he's also the head of our house. He doesn't favor Slytherins, but he does visit the house common room a lot. Speak up when you talk to him, he's an old fart and sometimes even if he doesn't hear your he'll pretend like he did and he won't make any sense." Slughorn had been head of Slytherin house since the end of the Second Wizarding War, Jasper was pretty sure, and while the guy was a great teacher, Jasper personally didn't think he fit the profile for a Slytherin.
-
"Okay. Thanks," he said, standing and heading to the front of the room to introduce himself. He walked over to the teacher's table, standing there awkwardly as he waited for him to finish one task, then another, and then another...
When the teacher finally seemed to have finished something, Milo anxiously forced himself in. "H-hello," he started quietly, realizing that the teacher probably didn't hear him yet. A Slytherin in the front row, who he actually recognized, snickered at rolled her eyes before turning her attention away from the newcomer. Okay. Fine. "Hi, Professor Slughorn, my name is Milo Crosswick. I was sorted into Slytherin yesterday. I was in a Potions class at my old school, but I was wondering what we were currently doing in your class," he said loudly and clearly, surprised at his sudden confidence. So there. -
Jasper watched Milo walk up to the Professor, if only to see if their interaction would go well. He chuckled as it started off with what seemed to be Milo just standing there waiting for Slughorn to finish whatever he was doing, which ended up being more than one thing. And then, Milo seeming to say something and Slughorn clearly not hearing him. Finally, Slughorn looked up, and smiled at Milo. Slughorn could be a little overly talkative, so he wasn't suprised when the old man started talking right away.
"Oh, of course, yes. I think- yes, I think I heard about you being in my class. Now, we've been learning about the different Draught potions. Hm.. Yesterday, we started with the Draught of Living Death. Perhaps you can find another student to show you the notes, although the book did cover most of it. Today we are making the Draught of Peace and the Draught of Drowsiness. It's all in book, as well." -
"I... actually, we covered that a little while ago. Salem's potions class moved pretty quickly, now that I think of it... I'm sure I'll be fine. Thank you, Professor." The two shared a brief smile before Milo walked back to his desk, sitting down and glancing around the room. Then, he turned and grinned at Jasper. "Turns out SA's ahead of you guys. The muggle school is beating you at potions," he said, perhaps just a little salty. With this knowledge, he was now determined to prove that muggleborns were just as good at magic as anyone else.
-
"Ah, well that's fantastic! We'll go over it again, anyway, though," Slughorn said, and even for a few minutes after Milo had gone the professor kept mumbling things under his breath, whether to himself or to whoever he thought was listening.
Jasper didn't react to Milo returning, since he was reading over the potions they'd be doing today, until he spoke. His nose wrinkled, and he grimaced. "Well, congratulations. But going faster in lessons doesn't mean that you're better, you could be skipping important information." -
"True, though I think the school, counted it as an AP course. Either way, I'm glad I won't have too much trouble getting used to this school." With that, the last of the students trailed in, and Slughorn decided to start the lesson. Milo paid close attention throughout the class, and immediately raised his hand to answer the first question the professor asked. He got it correct, and, to his surprise, the professor then gave points to the Slytherin house. As he continued to teach, the newcomer leaned over a bit closer to Jasper. "What do the points mean?" he whispered.
-
Jasper opted to just shrug in response to Milo, and soon enough the lesson was starting so he could focus on that instead. He made a quiet noise of joy, along with the rest of the Slytherins in the room when their house was given a point. Milo leaned over to speak while the professor started explaining how they would be making their Draught of Peace, and since it was all listed just the same in the book, he knew it would be alright to talk for just a moment. "The houses all have points. You get points for your house by doing good deeds, answering questions in class, or winning a Quidditch match. At the end of the year the house with the most points wins the house cup. Hufflepuff won last year, but so far this year we're ahead."
