Arturo's mother, Mrs.Day, and the nurse were pushing through the crowd. Mrs.Day was wearing a white turtle neck that said 'I Will Not Sink' with an anchor on it, baggy white pants, white sneakers, a cross around her neck and cross earrings. You could tell she was a dedicated Christian just by giving her a glance. She shoved through the people, the nurse behind her. The nurse got in front of Mrs.Day and stopped when she saw Ash. "Hey, is he doing alright?" She asked. Mrs. Day huffed, throwing her hands in the air. "No time for small talk, I have to make sure my blessed angel is okay!"
-
Ash was about to respond with a "help me not die in this crowd but yes he's fine" when the strange woman shoved off. She sighed and muttered "sure as hell ain't gonna sink, you're already at the bottom.." She grunted and shoved through the already-teasing crowd.
-
The nurse hurried after Mrs.Day who swung open the door to the office. Mrs.Day gasped when she saw her only son on the floor, rocking back in forth and sobbing. She knelt down and picked the light boy up, holding him in her arms like a baby. "What's wrong, angel?" Arturo only sobbed louder. The nurse sighed. "You can take him, he's already sighed out of all of his classes." Mrs.Day nodded and ran into the hallway, carrying the sobbing boy and pushing through the crowd. Loudly Arturo sobbed, "Ashhh!" as they made their way through the crowd.
-
Ash heard her name being called and turned to see who it was - it sounded familiar. But that was a mistake. In her moment of hesitation, three purposeful, hard shoves landed in perfect succession on her shoulders, causing her to lose her balance and fall to the floor. She heard herself scream as she tried to brace herself for impact on the hard floor.
-
Arturo let out yet another choked sob when no one replied to his call. His mother finally made it through the crowd and carried him to the car, putting him in the backseat and getting in the driver's seat. She started up the car and pulled away. "You interrupted an important meeting I was in, Arturo. I expect more from you." Arturo curled up in the backseat, eyes red and sore.
-
Ash stayed there lying on the floor, occasionally getting stepped on or kicked. When there was a break, she stood up as quickly as possible, not noticing that she had a bruise on her left cheek, or thinking to make sure she was okay. She just kept walking to class. Sure enough, all that took her five minute overtime. She rushed into Physics, apologizing for being late.
-
His mother went on and on about how disappointed she was in him for making a scene and getting hurt. She kept droning on about how she expected more of her only son. His mother was about to say something else when he interrupted her with a, "f--- you." She gasped and the car swerved a little on the road. Then came another rant. Arturo ignored her, putting his earbuds in his ears and blasting music into his ears on the way home.
-
Of course, the teacher stared at her for a while before continuing reading the syllabus. She looked over the thing and took out a notebook to doodle in.
-
Arturo sighed in relief when they finally pulled up to the golden gates that were the entrance to his home. Yeah, his family was pretty rich. His father was a lawyer and his mother was a business woman, but he didn't like to flaunt that around. The gates opened slowly and his mother parked the car in front of the doors, knowing a butler would get it for her later. Arturo climbed out of the car and strode towards the house, ignoring the greetings from maids and workers.
-
Ash liked to look away and doodle whatever her subconscious said, which is what she did. In half an hour, she looked down, and what appeared to be a face was staring at her. This was okay until she realized it was an intensely close drawing of Arturo. She crumpled the paper and shoved it in her hoodie pocket. The rest of the day was just horrid. Names and teasing, sucky teachers and bad school lunch.
-
Arturo spent the day locked up in his large bedroom, staring at himself in the large mirror under his flat screen telly. He felt like crying his eyes out because he was almost one hundred percent sure Ash hated him by now, but didn't have any tears left. He sighed, glancing at the clock. It was four in the afternoon now, and he had nothing left to do. He curled up under his thick blankets with his kitten named Holly.
-
Ash walked home slowly, not wanting to walk in the front door. When she did, however, she was met with a sharp backhand that would have toppled her if she hadn't been expecting it. Her parents were Christians, she hadn't lied to Arturo. But her adoptive parents were abusive. She sighed and was slapped around for ten minutes before being yelled at to get her lazy butt upstairs and start doing chores.
-
Arturo finally got up and decided to fill in some of the 'Get To Know You' sheets his teacher had given them to fill out and bring in tomorrow. He bit his lip as he sat at his pure white desk and attempted to answer the questions truthfully.
-
Ash did as she was told, grateful that there was no homework on the first day for her classes. She unwrapped her chest, changed into house clothes, and started with dinner.
-
He finished after almost an hour of work and shoved the paper into his bookbag. His thoughts wondered back to the year long project they were assigned in English, his least favorite subject. He was excited to be able to explore California, but if Ash hated him the project was going to be even worse than he thought it was. He sighed, pushing that out of his mind as he changed into a onesie he had gotten a while back with his own money. He wasn't very hungry for dinner so he went straight to bed.
