Landon closed his eyes, his head laying on the armrest of the couch. Landon tried hard not to fall asleep right then and there because he knew his father would be very angry with Landon if he did so.
-
Ann finished with the dinner preparations and went to set the table. Seeing Landon resting on the couch, she took his cup and filled it with ice water. She walked over to the couch, knelt down on the floor beside him, and held up the glass. "Landon," she said while gently shaking his shoulder.
-
Landon wasn't really paying much attention to what was happening around him until he felt someone shaking his shoulder lightly. He opened his eyes and propped himself up with one elbow, taking the glass from her hand. "Thank you."
-
Ann slowly nodded and made sure he was awake enough to not spill. She leaned back a little and rested on her feet, sitting Japanese style. "Are you feeling better?"
-
Landon nodded and sat up, resting his head against the back of the white couch. After taking a long sip of the cold water, Landon spoke. "I'm fine. It really wasn't anything.." Even as Landon spoke his voice was a bit shaky. The door to the cellar opened then closer, Charles coming down the stairs. "Good afternoon, sir.." Landon said, his voice shaking worse. Charles nodded to him then stopped at the foot of the stairs.
-
Ann frowned and was about to ask what he meant when Charles intruded. She hopped to her feet and nodded at the older man. "Good evening. Dinner's ready, if you'll take a seat. We shouldn't let it get cold." Only afterwards did she wince at how it sounded, and inwardly slapped herself for taking such interest in the way other cultures spoke. "Uh... If you're ready for it, that is.."
-
Charles stared down at Landon and snarled. "Get up right now." Landon quickly stood up, making sure not to spill the water in the glass. "I apologize, father. Right this way," Landon didn't even glance at Ann as he went to the table, sitting the water glass down and pulling his chair out for Charles. Charles sat down and Landon pushed the chair in, hurrying back to his own seat.
-
Ann kept her head down and headed to the kitchen, where the plates and food were. Dishing them all the same, according to what she watched from Landon, she made all the plates identical and prayed the food wouldn't touch. She took Charles' and Landon's out first, setting them down in that order, then she retrieved hers and sat down. She glanced around the table, making sure all glasses were full, and Parmesan cheese was out and readily available.
-
Charles nodded his approval to Ann. Landon sat down and took another long sip of what, staring down at his lap, chewing on his bottom lip. He would have just sat there until dinner was over if Charles didn't speak to him. "Landon, eat.Right now, or you will sleep outside as punishment." The boy quickly ate a small portion of food.
-
Ann sighed in relief and proceeded to eat. After the comment, she tried to hide the shock on her face as she avoided looking at Charles. She stared at her plate and pushed the food around, taking a nibble every now and then. Losing her appetite, she took a drink of water. "How is it?" She directed at Charles, in hopes of distracting the maniac.
-
Charles turned to Ann and smiled widely. "It was great, Rose. Really. You are an amazing cook." Charles finished his plate rather quickly, and stood up. "Landon, come with me." Landon stood and walked towards his father. Charles pointed to the wall. "Stand there." Charles went into a small chest in the living room and took out a long, old whip made of brown leather. Landon stood with his head facing the wall, resting his forehead on it.
-
Ann stared in shock at what was going on in front of her. Surely..no father would whip his son.. That's just crazy. It can't be that.. It has to be something else. Ann finished off her water and watched, still shocked and uneasy, but ready to get up if the need arose.
-
Charles walked over to Landon and stood a few feet away. "Take off your shirt and put your hands over your head." Landon quickly removed his shirt and tossed it onto the couch, then pressed his hands against the wall above his head. Charles reeled his arm back and hit Landon across the back with the whip. Landon cried out when the leather hit his back, making a deep gash from his right shoulder to the left corner of his back.
-
Ann sealed her lips shut to keep from screaming and leapt from her place at the table. Accidentally knocking over her chair in the process, she got to where Charles was, and wrapped her arms around his right forearm, holding it back with all her might (which wasn't an insignificant amount of force). "Please," she begged, burying her face in his arm. "He's in enough pain already.."
-
Charles glared at the girl but dropped the whip. He pulled away from Ann and started walking up the stairs. "You will get the other two tommorow night, Landon." With that, he shut the door to the cellar and locked it. Landon fell to his knees and gasped for air, blood already gushing out of the gash.
