They reached the bottom and tried to flip on the lights, but the lightbulb burnt just as it was turned on. "Um... if you guys can see in the dark, can you direct us to that box?" Steph muttered, knowing they could hear her.
-
Kayle spoke up, "All the way over the left, your left. Watch out for the wall."
-
Steph grabbed Anna's hand and the two slowly walked over. Eventually, their eyes had adjusted enough to the dark that they were able to move a little faster.
-
"Just a little more.." The two watched with shining eyes.
-
Steph stopped when her outstretched arm hit a wall, and felt for a box. She found it and turned to Anna. "Key?" Anna pulled it out of her pocket and unlocked the box, then pressed the only button in it.
-
When the door opened, the brothers launched at their women, engulfing them in bear hugs and gratefully kissing their cheeks.
-
Anna had expected it, and greeted Zander with open arms. For a moment, though, everything Steph had learned started coming back. She was terrified of having a vampire, no, two vampires in a dark room while she was mostly defenseless. She almost screamed when she was hugged.
-
Kayle shushed her lightly and held her hands for reassurance. "Why are you tense? I'm not gonna bite.." He paused and the grin could be heard in his voice. "Unless you want me to."
"Alright, that's enough, Kayle. Don't go scaring her."
"You know I don't mean to...Just playing, is all." -
The idea of him biting her was discomforting. She nervously shook her head. "We... we should probably go."
-
Kayle nodded and led her out of the darkness, cautiously following his brother.
-
Anna followed Zander. The group was silent as they walked up the stairs, but found Anna's uncle waiting for them.
-
Both males protectively held the ladies behind them. Zander more ready and willing to fight than Kayle.
-
"Dad, get out of the way, please." Steph stepped past Kayle.
"You've grown up knowing that those things will kill you if they can, and you're helping them?" He raised the stake that he'd been holding, as if his daughter had already become one of the undead.
"Yes, and you need to trust me. They won't hurt us, and we don't need to hurt them."
"They're going to kill you when you leave. I know they will." -
"We've spent four centuries living off of animals. We live in one place then move to the next. Never once have hunters bothered us until you. What are you gaining from killing off two vampires that don't cause any problems?"
-
"They'll kill you eventually. They always end up killing." He glared at the undead men.
