Should we just wait for him to say something or can we keep going as long as his character isn't doing anything relevant?
-
(I think we should go ahead and he can interject whenever he feels the scene allows it. Or he can start his own scene, or do anything he wants, really. He does have free will.)
-
Alrighty then.
The phone rang in her hands, startling her. Her hands spazzed, her fingers loosening and tightening again on empty air. She sat bolt upright, glaring down at her phone which had landed on the floor next to the bed. She narrowed her eyes, growling to herself. She reached down and picked it up, glancing over the caller ID.
"Huh." She answered it and held the phone without saying a word. -
Vivian smiled, even though she knew Maru wouldn't be able to see her, "Hey buddy, Viv here. You there?" Vivian started, before continuing anyway. "Are you ready to get downright blitzed tonight? Cause I just found like, five thousand dollars and I'm planning to party like it's 1444. I'm talking, like, vintage. Vintage parties."
Pausing for a moment, Vivian chuckled, "I mean, I was just going to head down to the club and make the girls dance for pennies, maybe pass out in the bathroom. That's always fun; but then I thought 'Vivian, you know who you need to get closer to? Your good friend Maru,' so yea, here I am. Giving you a call."
Waiting a moment as she wrestled with the decision in her head, Vivian shrugged it off, "Plus...plus I need someone to talk to. Melody's asleep and Neon won't answer. Do you know a girl called Reyna?" -
"Vivian.." Maru breathed into the phone, adjusting herself on the bed and sitting with her legs crossed over the edge. She'd begun to wonder what name she'd given the girl, but upon hearing her use it, realized she must have given the number to her in a drunken fit. She was rarely so careless as to give people her real name. She sighed.
"You are all over the place, my friend. Why don't you slow down a bit? My head is already.. Um.. Reyna? Reyna who?" -
Running a hand through her hair, Vivian paused as she realized that she didn't actually know Reyna's last name. It was just one of those topics that never came up. It was the same with Maru though, so they were kind of in the same boat. You know what they say, you can make a horse drunk, but you can't make it talk. Unless you're also drinking. "Reyna...I dunno. D something. Delaware? She's a blonde, average height...um, fairly hard to describe; she doesn't really stand out from a crowd. Doesn't matter. She'll probably be dead soon anyway. Shame though, she was a good girl."
Vivian hastily switched the hand her phone was in, "Moving on, the real reason I called; well, the real reason besides inviting you to 'Vivian's totally sick vintage drink-a-thon' trademark pending, is that I'm having a bit of a...well, moral issue. A moral calamity, one might say. Usually I'd just go to Melody, but she's asleep. After that Reyna herself, but she's part of the issue. So that just leaves you. Buddy." Vivian said, throwing out the last word hastily. -
Maru blinked, knitting her eyebrows together. It was true that she didn't particularly stick out, but that sounded quite like her Reyna "White". The bit about her new friend's imminent demise didn't come as a surprise, and Maru decided with ease not to address it for the time being. This did, however, mean that there was something going on with her. Possibly something significant.
In that case, this was a valuable opportunity.
"I see." she murmured, her voice dripping with deep concern for her friend. "You know you can talk to me whenever you need to. I guess we can talk while we're out at your.. nn.. vintage.. drinking thing." she said, quietly accepting the invitation. She tilted her head, a habit she'd formed in spite of the fact that she knew Vivian wasn't physically there and wouldn't see. "Buddy." -
Vivian lit up. Not literally, of course, because if it was literally that would be a terrible thing, but figuratively. Any chance to drink and talk was a highlight of her day, regardless of how bad it had been previously. And she'd had a pretty bad day today; and a highlight was just what she needed.
"Vivian's totally sick vintage drink-a-thon. And awesome. Sweet. Radical. Meet me at The Mad Fox. The two of us are going to drink until we forget each others names. And then we're going to discuss our feelings and other interesting topics. It's gonna be radical. Meetcha there." -
Maru flinched at her use of the word "radical". She couldn't tell if she was serious when she referred to discussion of their "feelings" as an interesting topic, either, but she accredited that to the fact that she'd already had a bit to drink. It had done just what it was meant to- taken the edge off.
"Hm." she grunted into the phone, hanging up without another word and tossing it back onto the sheets.
She sat still for a second, closing her eyes and feeling life around her. This was going to be an interesting night, no matter how tedious the day had been. She took a deep breath in and got up, stretching her arms. She went to the mirror and went through her hair once, reapplied her makeup, basically dolled herself up like a girl was supposed to before going out to rage and get unreasonably drunk with her "friends". She smiled to herself in the mirror and adjusted the knife strapped to her upper thigh beneath the black dress.
A quick glance over the room confirmed that all there was left was her phone. She took it from it's place on the bed, tucking it into the little black bag she wore like a sash across her shoulder. When she was sure she hadn't forgotten anything, she left, en route to "The Mad Fox." -
"This is so not shway." Vivian said, staring at the poster in front of her.
Those who say you can't exchange dignity for money are the worst kind of wrong. The kind of wrong where they don't even realize how wrong they are. Vivian would be lying if she said she regretted posing for the pictures; the money had saved her life, but that didn't mean she liked being reminded of them every time she turned around. The phone calls she'd gotten since they were released were also an annoyance, but at least she could live with the 'compliments.'
She didn't even think The Fox used to have posters, part of the reason she liked it, and out of all the available ones they had to choose the one she starred in. Perfect.
Waiting out the front, Vivian ran over the things in her pocket. The Fox was a little dangerous, being situated in that special place between work and district, so defense was a must. A heavy weight pulled on her pants, only matched by the money she was stashing in her other pocket.
Leaning back; and doing her best to cover the poster with her body, Vivian waited for her friend to show up. -
By the time Maru reached her destination, she was a nervous wreck. She hated walking down these streets imply because of the openness of them. There was so much open space for any number of people to rush through. No great lacking of places to hide out along the edges. It was an ideal place to get mugged, and she hated it. Her eyes darted around without pause the entire time, and didn't rest even when she'd come to a stop in front of her companion for the night.
"Hullo." she greeted her with a grin as she glanced behind her one more time. The knife did little to ease her nerves. She shook her head violently to clear it of her cynicism and gestured to the door. "All set?" -
"Yep, everything's all set out for us," Vivian said, "you okay, though? Look a little nervous. You didn't get mugged, did you? If it was a guy with an eye-patch I can get your stuff back, don't worry about it. It'll be fine. Not now though, we gots drinking ta do."
Pushing the door open, Vivian took in a deep breath; savoring the smell of the kitchen in the back. She wasn't sure what the special was today, but it smelled great. Shame she'd already eaten today.
Sitting down at one of the tables, Vivian motioned for Maru to join her and motioned at the barkeep to fetch her a drink. Discussion could wait, for the moment Vivian just wanted something to take her out of the world a little. -
Maru shook her head slowly, sighing a bit in relief as she entered behind Vivian.
"No. I didn't get mugged. And that means my nervousness paid off." she said with a breezy chuckle that might have seemed a bit more at ease if she weren't still checking her surroundings every few seconds.
She sat down directly across from Vivian, immediately setting her elbows on the table and resting her chin upon her propped up hands. She glanced around once and then gave her company her full attention. The girl wasn't saying anything, and that would be fine for now. For the time being, Maru was content to let her think or whatever it was girls like Vivian did when they weren't speaking or sleeping. -
Taking a sip of her wine, Vivian placed it slowly back on the table. She was no expert on wine, that was Melody's job, but she was pretty sure this wine wasn't 570 years old. So much for the time zone she wanted to party in, now her immersion was completely ruined.
Vivian took off her fake glasses and placed them on the table next to her drink. "You don't mind if I take my glasses off, do you? I mean, it's just appearances, right?" Vivian said, before moving on.
At first she tried to think of an introduction. A place to begin. She could start by explaining her situation to Maru. Or she could explain who exactly Reyna was. She might even decide to start at the end; dig straight to the core of the problem.
Thinking it over though, Vivian knew there was only one place she could start. Taking another drink, Vivian looked up at Maru, "Do you have any family, mate? Alive or..." -
Maru tilted her head, smiling reassuringly at Vivian and glancing down at the glasses on the table out of boredom. This was some party. She was vaguely aware of a glass sitting on the table in front of her, but she disciplined herself for the moment.
Priorities, Mari.
"Nnnn... Family? I guess I do." It wasn't so much a lie as a half-truth. She had a family, that was true. She wasn't on good ground with them, and hadn't been since months before the initial collapse, but that was unimportant. "Go on."
