Let's not forget that chickens right at this second are laying millions of eggs an hour all over the world. Sure there would be one less hard boiled egg, but when millions of eggs are being laid an hour, it's not as significant.

I'd like to point out that in extension of what sapphire just posted, there are an average of 7 human births per second.
And I did the math, at our current rate there is ONE abortion every 400 seconds or so. This is based on there being 86400 seconds per day and 3,700 abortions per day. (a number which is the HIGH estimate).
Abortion is cruel. It's unfair. And it's sad. I won't try and rationalize any of that or make it okay. My standpoint is not on the morality of an abortion. My standpoint is simply that if someone doesn't want to have a baby, that there is usually a good reason behind that. Whether that be because the parent wouldn't be able to physically or financially take care of the child, or if the parent isn't in a position to take care of the child, or if there are legitimate medical concerns. There are almost always good reasons why a parent on an individual level cannot raise the infant. And if someone wanted an abortion, they would find a way to get one with or without proper medical help.
According to the Boston's women's health book collective, an average of 219 women die daily of self inflicted abortions. Medical abortions are 11 times safer than carrying the baby full term and twice as safe as a penicillin injection.
Further more, embiotic stem cell research and stem cell therapy can very well give us a solution to most medical problems until a more "moral" one can be found. Stem cells provide medical benefits in the fields of therapeutic cloning and regenerative medicine, great potential for discovering treatments and cures to a plethora of diseases including schizophrenia, parkinson's, alzheimer's, cancer, diabetes, and spinal cord injuries. Also, with embriotic stem cells, limbs and organs could be grown and used in transplants. Even on a non-medical level, stem cells can be used by scientists to better understand human cell growth and cell development. Drugs will be able to be tested without needing animal or human test subjects. Stem cell research also gives scientists a more comprehensive understanding of regular embriotic growth and can help avoid pregnancy issues for others in the future. Also, unlike other stem cell therapies, embriotic stem cells can be used universally without the worry of a body rejecting them or growing the wrong tissues.
Lastly, on the issue of the inaccurate comparison used for my explanation on the previous page; a man on life support is not synonymous to an embryo. While both a technically parasitic to those who take care of them, a man on life support does not require a host. The question does come up that at what point does a woman lose the rights to her body? And why would it be considered alright that someone who depends on said host has special privileges to negate said hosts rights to their own body?
Trying to stick to Tony's opinion that you are a human the moment you are conceived, it's not morally right to end that. But with everything I've said, can you really argue that it's morally right to force an unwilling parent to abandon their rights to their own body, produce a potentially medically dangerous child to add to our rapidly growing population, and expect everyone else to share this view, simply because it's what YOU feel others should do? -
IHLAOY NewbieNo, I can't say that's morally right.
But I can say that it's morally wrong to kill a fetus simply because you're not prepared to care for it. A medical case, fine. A human places first priority over a fetus. But a baby isn't just something that appears out of thin air, and acting like it does and claiming 'oh, I can't support it,' is a hollow claim when it's you're fault for having it in the first place. Baring certain illegal circumstances that are tragic and shall go unnamed, it's the females responsibility to ensure that they don't fall pregnant without the proper thought, and the man's responsibility to do the same. There are dozens of different ways to ensure that one does not fall pregnant, and they should be used to prevent exactly this scenario, where there is no moral ground to take.
And using the argument of overpopulation is silly when advancing science in agriculture research and the abundance of free space left on earth is incredible. The earth can support several more billion people, we're a long distance from the top of the bell curve.
We're not discussing the specifics of stem cell research here, so I ask you don't change the subject. Yes, they are very useful to science, but that is neither a part of this argument nor something that needs to be discussed at this time.
And the end part of your question annoys me for some reason, but I can't figure out what it is. Maybe it's because you could reverse it and it would still sound the exactly the same. Tell me, do you expect people to share your view simply because it's what you feel others should do? Because I can tell you, my argument is not one from emotion.
Mostly. -
and yet with at best a little college education, little to no real world experience, and all in all, less of a clue then anyone else has, an emotional argument is the only one that would be completely valid.
The problem is that everybody feels a different way. which is why barberbob, saph and I are pro-choice.
we don't expect anyone to share our views, in fact we count on them not sharing them, and ask for the right to let everyone make their own decision. -
IHLAOY, actually you guys are kind of off topic so it wouldn't necessarily matter if he veered a little here.
I appreciate the argument being held here; especially with all this new info, but I would like to go back to the original topic. What are your thoughts about politics being influenced by religion. -
No. Plain and simple.
