Your parents are wrong, in my opinion. You can't become a singer if you suck at singing. Even if you take lessons.

I got the joke... I'm not stupid. But I disagree. If you suck at something, even if you try to improve it, you may not succeed.
This girl at my school thinks she can sing. She can't. She posts these videos of her singing and its just sad and embarrassing. She even takes lessons and still sucks.
So that's why I think what I think. -

It takes time to learn stuff. That girl for all you know, could one day be a pretty good singer due to her lessons. -

And I agree with what you said as well. And maybe that teacher is teaching her crap, all I know is that she needs to find another teacher, because she is just that bad. She can probably become a great singer, she just needs work.
