Thread Topic: My mom doesn't approve of my dreams
-
She wants me to be a dancer, doctor or model. I hate all three of the jobs, except I can sorta tolerate being a doctor. I want to be an author or singer.
I told her about the book I wrote, and how I sent it to five agencies and she was like, "Kirby, you're 13. No one's going to read a 22 chaptered-book a 13 year old wrote." I objected of course, and she said, "Okay, send it in to as many literary agents as you like, just don't be surprised you didn't get a call back."
I told her about my dream to be a singer and guess what she said? "You don't even have a good voice." my friends all tell me I have a good voice... My mom hasn't even heard me sing and she's making assumptions. I guess that's because this dream just popped up this year, I was never really a singer in previous years. "Do you want to hear me sing? You've never heard me sing before." I ask her. And she's like, "Not now, I'm busy." -________- I wrote my own songs with my own music this summer...she isn't even bothered to hear them.
I'm making a demo CD and since my mom doesn't approve, I'm going to have to do it behind her back ._. It can work, actually. My mom is always downstairs and she can't even hear me sing in my room upstairs. She never checks my computer to find any recording softwares so yeah. -
I spent 2012 working my butt off to get the book finished. 22 chapters, 70,000 words. Whoop and my mom doesn't even give a crap.

ColdHardTruth NewbieWhat she's saying is reality. I have been in the writing industry. It's not as easy as you think. You must be professional and mature to make a good first impression in your submissions. It takes weeks, even months to hear back from them. Most of the time, you won't hear back from them *at all* meaning you've failed. The amount of words or chapters in your book mean nothing. Quantity don't equal quality.
I don't know much about the music industry but I do know they shouldn't let 13 year olds sing until they hit puberty. -
Your mom seems like a dream crusher. -_-'
But I have to agree with CHT about the writing industry. Here's a tip. :P
Keep the original draft. If you get a new style or writing you want to try, add it to the original. If you want to change it, add to the original.
You can always add and take away from the original. If the original is good, and you make it better, chances are, it will get better. :) -
I write my own songs too. :P

I BELIEVE IN YOU KIRBY!! :D

Thanks guys.
@TCH- You sound experienced as an author. Mind if I ask you for advice when I need it?
@Sage- Thanks, I'll do that.
@Skyler- Thanks! :D Most of mine are about love :P -
ColdHardTruth NewbieYes, yes you may. Don't expect me to be nice about it.
Remember you are only 13. You have plenty of time to create your future. Education is the top notch. -
Mine are too. XD

Here's what I don't get: she wants you to be a dancer or model, but not an author or singer? None of those professions are really incredibly stable. The only real distinction is that a dancer or model works for somebody. Funny how legitimate employment is so often defined as working for another person. Authors and singers have to go through other people to get their work out (publishers and record labels), but you basically employ yourself, and you get to express yourself artistically. I don't care what anyone says about it not being a real job, self-expression is one of the most beautiful things on the planet. So basically I'm saying screw what your mom says. It's your life, not hers.

On the author note....
12 publishers turned down harry potter. If 5 turn down a book I wouldn't be that surprised. -
My mom always told me to go with what I want to do no matter what or who tries to stop me. Mothers are suppose to encourage not put down. Also they are suppose to be a good example for their kids.

Kirby, you do what's right in your heart. You love to write and sing? Incorporate that in your life no matter what. Your mom is obviously very narrow minded, and trying to live out her dreams through you. Don't let her. Enjoy your life to the fullest, and follow your heart.

@tongue- Thanks, you're right.
@Geek- I sent it to at least 3 more today, to American agencies. There's one reply right now that's sitting in my inbox I'm afraid to open D:
@Anri- Yeah, that's what I thought. But she keeps putting me down because she claims she "knows me and my talents".
@Cherry- Thank you (:. And yeah, you're right. -
Follow your dreams~
Seriously, writing a book at 13 is pretty hard ( I'm 13, and I write and publish them online lol) and that's a massive achievement!! If your mother doesn't see that, then she's really not your mother(if you know what I mean). They just want the best for you but they also should let you follow your dreams... My parents are like that, I want to be a actor, and everyone says I'm good and my drama teacher says I have massive potential. But no, my parents want be to be a police officer or a nurse:) But I usually say that I don't want to be a doctor, if you don't accept my choice of life, so be it. But don't go telling me what I can and can't do.
Your not alone~ love ya >3
