After a few moments, I pulled away, leaving and inch between our faces. My breathing was ragged and shallow, the action putting further strain on my lungs... It was worth it. I gave him a faint smile, for it was all I could muster, given the small amount of anesthesia barely starting to take effect.
-
That was the best moment in all my years of war. "Kaden..."
-
"Mm?" I cocked my head, looking at him. My vision was a bit blurry around the edges, another effect of the anesthesia. My body felt like a lead weight, already calmed and "shut down" by the medication.
-
"Promise me you'll live."
-
The blurs became more prominent now. "I promise," I whispered, resting my uninjured hand on his. "I will..."
The door opened, a loud clanging sound reverberated around the room as it hit against the wall. "Kaden, we're going to do the operation now." As soon as the words were said I was being wheeled out of the room. The bright lights overhead made me dizzy. -
I nodded solemnly. They didn't notice ofcourse, but Kaden must have. He was brave... I needed to be brave to. For the sake of us.
-
I heard the opening of a door, then a metal clang as it shut behind us. I wasn't fully conscious; my body was numb and seemed lifeless... I could still see and hear, nonetheless. I saw the surgeon pick up a scalpel and tear away at the flesh in my hand, digging the metal bullet out. I quickly shifted my gaze to the bright lights above me. It will be over soon... Then you can be with Ace again.
-
I couldn't bare think of the complications. The terror. The pain. Then dying, dying, dying. The Russians and Germans goose step. The French to Le Boudin. The Polish getting beat with pipes, The Swedes getting paddled.
-
The procedure continued on for what seemed like days. All the while, I fixed my eyes upon the lights above my head, spacing out. Unaware of what was going on, I was at peace. The light, the light, the light. Oh, yeah. Don't go into that.
-
And then my own Kaden, dead on the table in a pool of his blood. I pushed the thought away, fiddling with my thumbs.
-
I glanced over towards the surgeons. They had a needle and some sort of elastic thread... They were working on stitching up the wounds. It was weird, being semi-conscious as the operation went on. I remember being thirteen and having my appendix removed, but they'd knocked me out completely for that operation. This one had a lot more risk factors... I blinked, mentally veering my train of thought away from that track.
-
I slid a small, thumb sized container of paint out of my pocket. I dipped my finger in it and light drew a cross on my hand.
-
In a matter of minutes I could hear the faint clanging of metal, indicating the putting away of tools. I shut my eyes, the light now causing my eyes to twitch. I heard the soft roll of wheels on the ground and the opening of the same metal door as before.
-
I waited in silence.
-
The nurses reached the room and slowly opened the door. I wanted desperately to open my eyes, but a sudden fatigue had sprang over me.
