I felt the bullet rush by my ear. I flinched but didn't make a sound. It was devastatingly clear how close to death I was.

He tossed the gun to the ground, watching for her reaction.

I didn't look at the gun. Instead I looked into his eyes. They were an icy-blue and I could tell that they were hardened. He had gone through a lot in his childhood.

He smirked. "Maybe you're tougher than I thought. Maybe I shouldn't kill you."

I didn't reply and didn't look away. A little bulb of hope blossomed in my heart at his words but I kept my expression cool, still looking in his eyes.

"Well," he bent over to pick up the gun. He stood up, met her gaze once again, and walked closer to her. "I guess I'll be stuck with you for a while, now."

I silently cheered inside but just nodded. I was still looking into his eyes, searching for some kindness inside them.

He stood there for a moment, thinking. "So... um..." He suddenly had trouble meeting her gaze. "What's your name?"

"My name is Nataly but my friends call me Nat." I cocked my head to the side a bit. "What's your name?"

"Okay, Nataly. And I'm Mark." He smiled a bit.

I smiled a little back. I didn't know what else to do. What do you say to somebody who just tried to kill you not five minutes before?

Was he allowed to call her Nat? Or would that qualify them as friends?
