"Thank you," I said and proceeded to give him the directions.
-
Ten or fifteen minutes later, he was in a suburban neighborhood. It felt weird, but... They'd only be there for a while, right?
-
He soon drove by my house, which looked more like a mansion. It was four stories tall and was made of a grayish brick. My parents were really old-fashioned.
-
He glanced over at her, but continued driving.
-
A tear trickled down my face but I didn't wipe it away. "Goodbye," I murmured quietly.
-
He continued to drive. He almost felt bad about taking her away from her home. Almost.
-
I looked away from the window and out the front windshield. I didn't say anything and another tear rolled down my cheek.
-
As they left the neighborhood, he sped up.
-
It was raining harder now and my tears fell more quickly and abundantly. My shoulders shook but I didn't make a sound. I leaned my head in my hands.
-
He glanced in the back seat. There was a box of tissues. He grabbed them and set them in her lap. "Sorry."
-
I pushed the tissues away and wiped my eyes. Luckily, I didn't put makeup on today. I watched the rain slide down the window.
-
"Be happy it was a good home to you for sixteen years." He looked out the windshield, the windshield wipers sliding back and forth.
-
"Yeah, I'm happy," I mumbled, emotionless. My voice sounded dead.
-
He glanced over at her, then back at the road.
-
I closed my eyes and decided to try and sleep. There obviously wasn't anything better to do.
