"Yeah, I know." I climbed out of bed and started putting my clothes on.
-
"Forewarning: you might feel sore for the next day or so." I picked up my bow and headed out the bedroom door.
-
"I already do." My hips ached a little, but it was worth it.
-
"Nah, I mean inside." I walked onto the front porch. Celeste and Sam were nowhere in sight.
-
"Oh." I followed him out and didn't see Sam or Cel. "Where are they?"
-
"Celeste!" I yelled as loud as I dared. Didn't want to attract walkers.
-
I ran off the deck, starting to panic. I whistled a tune that she always responded to, if she could hear.
-
I heard a twig snap on the side of the house. Faster than thought, I raised my bow to the noise and waited to get a clear shot.
There was no return whistle. -
I was panicking and started freaking out. Where we're they?! I didn't even see the walker burst out of the woods.
-
My eyes widened. The walker coming from the woods had the same shirt on as Celeste had been wearing. I dragged Nik back into the house, locking and barracading the door. I pulled her up the stairs and into the room with the supplies.
-
I had seen the walker and despair washed over me. I sobbed quietly. She was gone, forever.
-
"Cmon. You gotta be quiet." I shushed her, trying to stop the broken sobs.
-
I stopped sobbing. My lip quivered and I buried my face in his shoulder. "It's all my fault," I whispered.
-
I didn't laugh. I didn't feel like I would ever be able to smile again. Tears streamed down my face, but I didn't make a sound.
-
I took Nik onto my lap and rocked her back and forth, softly singing a lullaby my mom had sung to me.
"Just close your eyes
The sun is gonna die
You'll be alright
No one can see you cry."
