I saw the boy walk by, and I looked away, staring straight ahead.
-
I took a breath and continued walking until I hit the main road.
-
I sighed and finally started the car, backing up out of the parking lot.
-
I frowned. Today hadn't been the best. For starters, the Gatorade was expensive as s--- and tasted horrible. The worst part was definitely the acknowledgement about who I was. If it were my choice, I'd rather be a face without a name in the crowd opposed to being labelled as 'The Dropout'.
-
I started home, but decided to take a little detour. Turning the other way and heading towards downtown.
-
I was racking my mind for places to stay tonight. The woods was a no; it smelled like rain would come in over night. The settled it then... It was the shelter or taking up the girl on her offer. The shelter.
-
I drove by, what seemed to be, many druggies, homeless, and dealers on the streets. Many seemed to be drunk from the cheap bar that was around the area.
-
In order to get to the shelter I'd have to pass through downtown, which was by far not the best place to be from sunset until sunrise. The sketchier people resided around there. Always drunk, high, or both... It was a horror to walk through and saddening as well.
-
I saw many give me dirty looks, many sad faces. I forced myself to look away some of them stumbled after my car like zombies. Wanting a ride out of this hellhole. But, if I wanted to get to where I was going, I would have to go by here. This sick, scary, and sad place.
-
In a matter of ten minutes, I was in the heart of downtown. The streets smelled of sweat and urine; unwashed people... I cringed. "Yurr a kind sirr..." one man slurred, reaching out to me. "Got any cassh~?" I shook my head and kept walking.
-
I kept driving. f--- this s---! I thought. I'm out of this s---ty ass f--- town. For good.

I broke into a run, wanting more than ever to be within the safe concrete walls of the shelter. I ran past a vaguely familiar vehicle before pushing open the large metal doors.
-
I stared right ahead, not looking around, refusing to. I drove past the big welcome sign and down to the lake.
