Emily and Christopher went to their uncle's house to stay for the weekend, their parents had gone on holiday to France.
They got to the door, the house was big and dark, it was once bright white, but it was so old and hadn't been taken care of, so it was grey and dirty and had a strange feeling to it that Emily didn't like.
Christopher put his bag on the floor and knocked gently on the door.
No answer.
He knocked again, but a little harder this time.
Still no answer.
He knocked quite hard that his uncle yelled in his scrawny voice: 'OK! OK! I'm coming, just wait for god's sake!'
And that's what they did, it was a long time, but finally their uncle came, he looked weirder than before, he was tall and bulky, he had black hair that almost shined considering he was in such an old and filthy house, he had a scar on his forehead, it wasn't very big, but whenever he wasn't around, Christopher would call him Frankenstein, but looking in to his deep dark eyes made Christopher feel like he knew all his secrets in a way that sent a shiver down his spine, but the stranger thing was, uncle Desmond was actually very kind, he was grumpy, but he wouldn't hurt a soul.

CONTINUATION
'Um, hello uncle' said Christopher quietly, Emily said nothing.
'Hello, lad, nice to see you both, come in now you scangy mongrels' said uncle Desmond.
They both walked in silently.
They were in the hall, it was filled with antique brown tables, they walked further down in to the living room, it was a nice apple green color, but all the furniture looked antique and a dark oak brown color, there was also an ebony piano in a corner, Emily rushed over to it and sat down, she rubbed her fingers over the keys and listened to the lovely sounds each one made, and then after looking excitedly at it for a while, she said: 'I love this piano! May I play it whenever I like?'
Uncle Desmond came in carrying their bags, he set them on the floor and said: 'Sure, but not too much, I can't stand that racket for long, but an equivelant of an hour is fine with me'
'Oh thank you so very much, uncle!' cried Emily with joy.
'No problem' and uncle Desmond dissapeard back in to the hall, they both followed hima and found him walking up the stairs.
With each step they took, there was a creaking sound, until they got to the top, there were four bedrooms and one bathroom, uncle Desmond went to the two bedrooms on the left wall, and put Emily's wall in one room, and Christopher's bag in the other.
'There you go, now settle down, you need anything then I'll be in the living room' he said quietly and went downstairs.

Emily looked at her room, it was an apple green like the living room, it had a queen sized rose pink bed, and an oak brown wardrobe with a chest of drawers to match, the window was small and single, next to it was a dresser that's color matched the wardrobe and drawers, and the rest of the room was bare.
'I guess it looks quite alright' she said to herself.
Meanwhile, while Emily was unpacking, Christopher looked around his room, it's walls were red, and there was gold stencilling at the very top and around the light hanging on the ceiling, the bed was single and was an oak color, the window was very big, and had a seat by it, probably for reading, because it had an oak colored table next to it, the chest of drawers was connected to the wardrobe, so it all seemed one, and that was it, except for the rug on the floor which was circles of beige and blue.
'Pretty good' he thought to himself. He was about to unpack, when he noticed something on the wall, he looked closer, and it seemed that it was a tear in the red wall paper, he walked over to it, it seemed it was covering something, Christopher tore open the wall paper a bit more, and saw that there was something there, it was a faded red line, he tore the wall paper a bit more, and it revealed the letter D .
Before he would tear anymore, he decided to go talk with his uncle to see what it is exactly, or else he'd get mad at him for tearing some of the wall paper.

He went downstairs to the living room, where his uncle said he's be, and saw him standing by the ebony piano, he was looking at a picture frame, showing a light brown haired woman with two children, a boy with black hair like uncle Desmond smiling with a lollipop in his hand, and a girl in her late teens with light brown hair and blue eyes like her mother, they were all smiling, and Chistopher was surprised to see that uncle Desmond was crying.
'Um...' Chistopher began.
His uncle quickly turned to him with wide eyes and an angry expression and barked: 'WHAT? What do you want?'
'Um...' he began.
'Speak, boy!' he barked.
'Well, I think you should come see for yourself'
He went upstairs, his uncle put the frame down and went upstairs following Christopher to his room.
He stood at the doorway looking around, while Christopher was standing on the beige and blue rug in the centre of the room.
'What is it, boy?'
'Well, there's a tear here, and I sort of got curious and tore a bit more to see what it is, and I saw that letter and wondered what it was...'
Uncle Desmond widened his eyes in disgust and said: 'What the hell...? H-h-how did you find that? What were you thinking boy?'
'...I, I, I don't know...'
Uncle Desmond walked over to the letter.
'D' he said. 'D, D... D...!' he kept saying.
'What? What is it?'
'DIE!!!!!!' Uncle Desmond roared and kicked the chair that was next to the window, he kicked the table next to it too and banged on the window, while saying over and over: 'Die! Die!'
Christopher didn't understand what he was reffering to, but before he could say anymore, uncle Desmond stomped out still shouting the word 'Die!'
'What was all that about?' Christopher asked himself.
A few moments later, Emily came in and asked him: 'What's going on?'
Christopher told her what happened.
-
'Oh my...' she said, sounding shocked after what Christopher had told her. 'What do you think he meant?'
'I've no idea, he was acting weird all of a sudden, he may be scrangy and grumpy, but he's not mean, and I rarely see him shout'
'Me too' she said, and a few moments later, she said: 'Why don't we see the rest of the wall paper?'
'Sure' said Christopher and they both tore up part of the wall paper.
Then... slowly... the word came up in front of them, the three lettered word written in gloopy looking handwriting in red, maybe it was written in blood.
... Die
'Die' Emily Whispered.
'Die' Christopher whispered after her.
'Who wrote this?' Christopher asked.
'My son did' said a scrangy voice in the door way.
They both looked behind them and saw uncle Desmond standing there with both his hands on the door way.
'You mean cousin Harry?' Christopher asked shakily, 'The one who died 4 years before I was born?'
'That's right' said uncle Desmond, 'Your uncle Desmond did have a wife and kids you know'
'So...?' said Emily, you were probably thinking something similair.
'They're all dead' said uncle Desmond.
'Oh...' said Christopher.
'it's ok, don't be sorry, your aunt Wendy, my wife, died from lung cancer when your cousin Harry was only four and your cousin Marie had just turned fourteen'
'And then what happened to them?' Emily asked, 'Did you send them away?'
'Well, Harry died from...' uncle Desmond stopped, a tear ran down his cheek, but before Emily or Christopher could continue, he said: 'Harry jumped out of the window holding three balloons because he wanted to fly, I can't say he's foolish, because he was four at the time, and Marie, well, after her mum and brother went away from her life forever, she...' and then more tears went down his cheeks.
Emily quickly went to Christopher's bed, his bedside table had a box of lavender sented tissues, she took some and gave them to uncle Desmond, whom wiped away his tears.
'Thanks, las' he said finally.
'So what happened?' Christopher asked eagerly.
'She went crazy, she said she was seeing her mother's ghost, she said she saw her little brother playing with his ball in the hallway, I didn't believe her, I took her to see a therapist, but it didn't work, she was just, out of her mind...'

'So what did you do?' Christopher asked.
'Nothing' he said, 'What else could be done? If she was seeing things, or at least, she claimed she was, I just had to sit back and think that she'd get over it, but she didn't'
'And then what...?' Emily asked, she seemed far away, in her own thoughts.
'And then, she, she, started doing even stranger things, one night, she got candles from the kitchen, put them all around her bed, at that time this wallpaper wasn't here, the walls were a soft yellow color, she stood by the walls dancing around like crazy, and then, she got a knife from the kitchen, I saw her and asked her what she would do with it, she didn't anwer me, she just walked up the stairs, I shouted at her to give me the knife before she cut herself, but when I said that, she stopped at the top of the stairs, she turned to look at me, and said: 'That's what I want to do, I want to cut '
'I couldn't believe it, I looked in to her eyes, they were once a beautiful blue, but now, they seemed so far away, in another world, they seemed so... so... empty ...'
She continued walking up the stairs, I followed her and asked her to please get a hold of herself and stop this nonsense, but she wouldn't, she got to her room, and left the door open for me, when I came in, I saw her standing by the wall, looking at it, the knife in her hand, she made a cut in her elbow, I quickly aproached her and tried to get it off her, but she wouldn't let go, it flew out of her and my hands, and flew on to the rug, and left that mark'
He pointed at the rug and both Emily and Christopher saw it, a red splodge on the right part of the carpet.
'I hadn't noticed that' said Christopher.
-
'Anyway, the knife fell on the carpet, I walked away from Marie, shaking my head, not believing that my daughter had turned in to something else, and I felt like I didn't know her, I foolishly walked away, not believing what my eyes were telling me, I came back after an hour, I looked in to her room, she had written the word Die in blood on the wall, I called for Marie, panicking, I looked all over and then I realised that the light in the bathroom was on, but the door was open, I crept slowly in to the bathroom, and I said in a quiet, terrified voice: ' Marie? '
There was no answer, the shower curtains were drawn against the bath tub, I walked in to the bathroom, I drew the curtains, and then I... I, I...' uncle Desmond couldn't continue, he wasn't crying, but he had a look of disbelief on his face, like he still couldn't believe what his eyes had told him that night.
'What is it, uncle?' Christopher insisted.
'She... She... she...' uncled Desmond shook his head once more.
'What's the matter, uncle?' Emily persisted, 'What happened?'
'Yeah, what did you see?' Christopher asked him.
Uncle Desmond said nothing, he even stopped shaking his head, he was just staring in to space, but then, finally, the words came.

Christopher and Emily couldn't believe what they were hearing.
'You mean, she.. she, she was dead?' Christopher asked shakily.
Uncle Desmond nodded, not looking at him.
Neither of them didn't know what to say.
'She killed herself, she wanted to be in peace with her mother and brother, and left me to suffer the sadness and greive my whole life in this hell of a place we call life' he said, and a tear came to his eye.
'Oh my...' Emily said, and tears came to her eyes, too.
Christopher just looked sad, but for some reason, his heart beat quickly, maybe he was scared because he was in a room where someone who had gone crazy from the death of their mother and younger sibling, and committed suicide.
'So' Uncle Desmond continued, 'I covered the walls with wall paper, did Marie a funeral, and buried her next to her mother's grave, and I moved on, I tried to block out the memories, but no matter how much I tried, I couldn't get over it, just seeing Marie's lifeless body in the bath tub, the way she wrote that word on the wall with her own blood, the way my son screamed to his death when he jumped out of the window, the way I held my wife's hand as she took her last deep breaths in the hospital, it was all just too much for me'
'I'm sorry for you loss, uncle' said Christopher.
'We both are' said Emily.
'It's ok, at least I have you two, and your father and his wife, I still have family' he said.
'Yeah, but that just doesn't happen to anyone, am I right?' said Emily.
'I guess so' said uncled Desmond.
Emily and Christopher knew what to do then, they walked over to him and hugged him tightly, when they both stopped, they saw that tears were in his eyes, but he was smiling.
'You kids make me happy' he said, 'You both remind me of Harry and Marie'
They both smiled at him.

He took a deep breath and said: 'Just promise me you won't tell anyone, I know that my brother and everyone else knows, but just don't bring the subject up, ok?'
'Ok' said Christopher.
'Sure' said Emily.
'Promise?' Uncle Desmond asked them.
'We promise' said Christopher.
'Cross our hearts and hope to die' said Emily.
'Good then, now come here, I have something for the both of you' he said and walked out, Christopher and Emily followed him.
They got to his bedroom and stood by his bed as he bent to look for something under his bed, he then got out to boxes, one was wrapped in bright gold wrapping paper and had red stars all over it, the other was slightly smaller and was covered in blue lines of different color scales, first it was a dark blue, then terquoise, then cyan, then a minty blue, and then white, and then back to dark navy blue.
He gave the gold one to Emily and the blue one to Christopher.
'Thanks' said Christopher.
'That was kind of you' said Emily, 'Thank you uncle'
'No prob, there's ice cream in the kitchen if you want some, but could you go out now? I want to sit alone with myself for a while, hope you like your presents' he said quietly, but he was smiling softly, a side of him Christopher and Emily rarely saw.
'Ok then, but you know you can talk to us anytime if you want to' said Christopher, and he took Emily's hand and the both walked off, closing their uncle's door behind them.
They went downstairs to the kitchen, Emily sat on the table and opened her present while Christopher scooped out the strawberry ice cream in to two bowls.
'I feel sorry for him' said Emily, gazing at the red stars on her wrapping paper.
'Me too, he doesn't deserve that, not at all' said Christopher.
'I know, I wish we could do something for him' said Emily.
'Like what?' Christopher asked her.
She didn't answer him, but she had an idea.
He gave her a bowl of ice cream and took his own, he sat at the table and looked at the blue striped wrapping paper, then slowly, he began to open it, and so did Emily, and they were astonished with their gifts.
'Oh wow!' cried Emily, 'A pink barbie car! With two barbies! Another one for my collection!' and then a few moments later after looking at it more clearly, she said: 'With all-new controllers and flasing lights, and music, too!'
'Cool!' Christopher looked at his gift, 'A box set of 25 different dinosaur action figures, and they tell you their names too, and look! There's a button on each one to listen to it rour! This is cool!'
'Let's get him something as a favour' said Emily.
'Like what?' Christopher asked.
'I don't know, anything! Something home made, it'll last longer'
'I guess you're right' said Christopher.
They spent the rest of the afternoon making a card for their uncle, they got a paper and did different stencil designs on the front, and put their best pictures on the inside, and wrote in their best hand writing: We love you uncle Desmond, and we're sorry for your loss, but you have us, we'll always be here, and we thank you very much for the gifts

They put it in an envelope they found in one of the drawers of uncle Desmond's desk, and put it on his pillow, their parents would pick them up in the morning.
'I hope he likes it' said Emily.
'I'm sure he will' said Christopher, and they went to bed.
That night, the most strangest things happened, as Emily went to run a bath, she saw that the taps had turned on by themselves as she was brushing her teeth, and Christopher's teddy bear was on the chair by the window, when the last time he left it was on the bed.
Later on, they met up and told eachother what had happened.
'Do you think it's a ghost?' Emily asked him.
'I'm not sure, maybe it's the ghosts of the people who once lived here' said Christopher.
'It's possible' said Emily.
Then, they said no more and went to bed, uncle Desmond came in to Emily's room to tell her a story, he read her Cinderella and then, kissed her on the forehead and said goodnight to her, he was about to get up when she held his hand, and he sat back down on the bed and smiled at her.
'Uncle' she said, 'Do you believe in ghosts?'
'Why yes I do, I may sound crazy, but at times I'm sitting in the living room playing the piano my once dearly loved daughter used to play every day, I'd sit there, and for a few moments I'd see her sitting with me, smiling, and then she'd fade away'
'Really?' Emily asked, astonished, 'The taps in the bathroom came on by themselves an hour ago!'
'Maybe my house is haunted by my loved ones, I don -
That was my short story called The ghost in the garden
I know it's long, I don't need to be told twice. -
Wait, wtf happened? Oh wait, copy -pasting it did something wrong, how embarrassing, let me continue.
-
CONTINUATION D:
'Maybe my house is haunted by my loved ones, I don't care, I want them to stay, it makes me feel like a part of their souls is still with me, like they're alive and breathing' said uncle Desmond.
'I guess so, you know, Christopher said he saw his Teddy bear move, too' said Emily.
'Maybe my son likes it' said uncle Desmond and he laughed.
After a few moments, uncle Desmond kissed Emily on her cheek and said: 'Don't worry, I'll protect you from all the ghosties in this house'
'Hey! I'm not a baby!' cried Emily.
'OK then, but don't worry, you'll be fine, don't get scared' and he walked out.
Emily didn't think he'd seen the card, or he would have said something, or acted weirdly.
***
That morning, Emily and Christopher's parents came, they were waiting by the door, uncle Desmond wasn't awake yet, but Chistopher opened the door and saw his father smiling at him and his mother holding his arm smiling too.
'Enjoy your weekened, son?' his father asked.
'More than usual, actually' said Christopher.
'Really? Why, what did you do that was different? I thought you hated coming over to your uncle's house' said his mother.
'I do, but uncle Des told me some ghost stories so I was really excited, Emily the same' said Christopher.
'Oh well, maybe we should bring you hear more often' said his mother and they both laughed, Christopher just smiled.
Emily came holding her bag.
'So where's your uncle?' Their father asked them.
'He's not awake yet' said Emily.
'Oh? he was always one for sleeping in' said their father.
They were going to get in the car, when both Emily and Christopher froze in their spots, they saw something white floating in the garden, it was just a white blob moving round, they were sure about it.
'What's the matter?' Their mother laughed, 'You two look like you've seen a ghost!'
'I think we have' said Christopher, his mouth wide open.
'Don't be silly, kids, your uncle's ghost stories have just gotten to you, that's all!' their dad laughed.
'No really, I saw something, I know I did' said Emily.
'Kids!' cried their dad, 'Such overactive imaginations!'
Christopher then remembered the promise he had told uncle Desmond, to not mention the death of his loved ones to anyone, he knew his dad and mum knew, but thought he shouldn't bring back the bad memories.
They then saw another white blob, they were sure this time, both Emily and Christopher.
But they didn't say anything, it was no use, but they were both thinking that it was cousin harry the ghost playing with his ball.
They walked towards the car, when the got in, fastened their seat belts, and shut the doors, Emily looked out the window, and saw her uncle Desmond sitting in his bedroom by the window, he was smiling very happily, not like she had ever seen before, and he was holding a white card that was colored in with multiple stencil designs, and she knew, at that moment that she and her brother Christopher had brought to uncle Desmond a happiness he thought he'd never see, and that he had gained a happy memory of people that he had once lost.
