William's face fell, his shoulders slumping. 'I suppose you're right,' he sighed. He squeezed her hand and they watched as Jason just sat there. He was bending over something, probably his phone. Holli and William creeped closer, trying to see who he was texting.
Just then, William's phone gave a very loud bleep . He swore under his breath and pulled it out.
Jason turned around, noticing the bleep. He jumped up and stepped forward, grabbing Holli's wrist. 'What the f--k! Why would you watch me like that?!' he shouted, looking up at William. -
William recoiled backwards in surprise, staring at Jason. "We've, we've only just got here, we didn't know you were here!" he stuttered.
Jason rolled his eyes. "Sure" he muttered.
Holli glared at him trying to loosen his grip on her arm. "Let go of me!" she protested aiming a kick at his calf, but Jason veered out the way.
William approached his older brother. "Are you with Charlie? Sebastian?" he leered.
Jason gave an angry laugh. "No! Are you out of your mind? I would never ever go back to those....." he swore loudly as if he hoped they could hear him.
"How are we supposed to know?" Holli spat attempting a chines burn on Jason's arm. "You stole our food after all!"
Jason shrugged. "So, I was hungry!"
"We went three days J! Three days without food or water, we could of died!" William exclaimed.
"But you didn't" Jason stated struggling to hold on to Holli.
"If you ain't with them why have you got hold of Holli?" William roared angrily. -
'Well- I...' Jason spluttered, glancing down at Holli, who was trying to squirm out of his grip. Having no particular reason to hold onto her, he let go of her wrist, letting her stumble backwards.
Holli rubbed her wrist, narrowing her eyes at Jason. He had her bag slung over his shoulders, and no guilt whatsoever. This annoyed Holli to no end. -
William glanced from Jason to Holli sensing the uneasiness. "Give her back her bag J" William ordered.
"Their ain't no food left, only half a bottle of water!" he exclaimed.
Holli shrugged. "I don't want it for that"
Jason raised his eyebrow as he unzipped the bag, took out the water-bottle, then passed it to Holli.
She snatched it quickly, then took out the brownie-red notebook.
"We need to read, some more of this, see if it tells us what happened between Grandma, I mean Rosalie and Sebastian to see what happened" she stated opening up the notebook and flicking through a few pages until she got to the second entry. She took a deep breath and read.
Dear Diary,
I haven't written in here for a couple of days so I have much to tell you. Lizzy came to my birthday on Tuesday and it was absolutely wonderful seeing her again. She was ever so inquisitive about you, wanting to read what I had written. Normally I would, I shared everything with my dear sister but this diary I wanted to keep private. That's one of the reasons I didn't write in you until today, Friday. She stayed for a few days, sleeping on the sofa as a substitute for a bed. I had offered her mine but she politely refused.
Holli sighed. "This is hopeless! All she writes about is her birthday!"
William rested his hand on his shoulder. "Don't stress about it, there will be something, how about I read for a bit?"
Holli nodded gratefully. -
They sat against the two trees they'd found Jason at. Holli stared off into the distance whilst William read through the diary. Jason tried to read over William's shoulder, but William kept swatting him away like a fly.
Jason and Holli stared at each other. Holli searched her relative's face for some kind of guilt or regret, but he showed none. Jason wasn't sure what he thought about Holli. He was tied between selfish jerk and immature irritation.
After a while, William spoke up. 'I've found something!' he exclaimed triumphantly, shuffling closer to Holli so she could see. He read aloud from the page:
'Dear diary,
Sebastian came over again today. He never comes over anymore, that is, unless her wants something. Today, he looked as if he had a strong yearn for something that would only benefit him.
I sat him down and interrogated him for an hour, before he finally confessed that he'd been working in a criminal operation, and he wanted me to join him. He said his intentions were favourable, but he couldn't tell me what they were. I can only give him the benefit of the doubt.' -
Holli sighed. "Thanks, but how would that make Rosalie and Sebastian sworn enemies? He tried to kill her!" she stated tears creeping towards her eyes. "He was heading towards the city when we last saw her William! What if she's dead already!?" she wiped her tears away furiously then looked up.
"Carry on reading, please!"
William's expression was full of concern and support. He wrapped his arm round Holli and continued reading from the next entry.
Dear Diary,
I'm afraid to say I now know of what Sebastian's criminal operation contains. I reluctantly agreed eager to discover what secrets my cousin was hiding. I figured it must be something small, like stealing a ornament from a shop or maybe a chocolate bar, as I knew Seb has always had a sweet tooth. I knew stealing was an offence, and I didn't know what I was getting myself into, but my curiosity got ahead of me.
I was wrong, but not in a good way. What my cousin was planning was far worse from stealing a chocolate bar from the local super-market. He was planning a murder of Bertie Wilson, a fifty-year old who had apparently cause Sebastian's life a misery for a few years of his child-hood. I couldn't understand this as Bertie would of needed to be at least thirty when Seb was born. I couldn't do anything about it now, I was sworn to secrecy before I was told about the terrible crime. -
Holli frowned at the notebook, wiping her eyes furiously. William closed the notebook, setting it on the ground. 'That was the last entry,' he muttered.
'None of this adds up,' Jason said, 'Who the hell is Bernice Williamson-'
'Bertie Wilson,' Holli mumbled.
'And what did he do to Sebastian?' Jason finished, ignoring Holli. -
William didn't say anything uis expression creased. Holli smiled hopefully. "William! What are you thinking about?"
William held up one finger indicating he needed a minute. "I recognise the name, Bertie Wilson. Uhm"
Holli rested her hand on his seeing that he was getting her up about it.
"Take a deep breath, now think. Where do you recognise the name from?" She asked softly.
He smiled up at her, the gesture calming him. He thought harder. "School, history, science no, English!" He muttered.
"I've got it!" He exclaimed eyes widening. "During English we were reading about a murder and we had research and find about one ourselves. I found a murder of someone called Bertie Wilson!" He pulled out his phone and scrolled through his documents on word. He continued- reading aloud.
"Bertie Wilson was abducted in the early hours of the morning, during the year 1998. His wife reported his absence at 5am after no signs of her husband. His body was found 2 days later in a rubbish bin near a park. He is believed to of been stabbed in the side and died of blood loss" William finished. "I ain't that good at presentations but it gives you an idea of what happened to him"
Holli grinned, hugged William and gave him a kiss on the cheek. She was so excited she even gave Jason a small hug.
"We can take this to the police along with the notebook. It's enough evidence to get Sebastian arrested!" She exclaimed.
William and Jason, however weren't looking happy. Jason was glaring at her, William fiddling with grass and looking down. "What's wrong?" She asked. "I know he's your Grandad but...."
Jason rolled his eyes. "Are you that stupid? If the police get Grandad, they'll arrest us to! We worked with him for several years" he spat and called Holli a terrible swear word.
Holli reddened and bit her lip hurt by his words. William glared at his sort-of-brother.
"Don't Jason. We don't know what he can do to Holli's family, isn't it worth him locked up forever and us for a couple of years?" William stated sadly.
"What makes her family more important than Bertie? Then all the other people he's killed!?" Jason spat. -
(Thank you for reading the longest paragraph ever 🤣)
-
(You're welcome lol)
'Because we can't help everybody he's killed!' Holli shouted, standing up. Her eyes welled with tears, cheeks growing red. 'They're already dead!'
Jason stood too. 'How do you know you're family isn't!' he yelled. 'He could've already killed them!'
Holli gritted her teeth and punched Jason square in the face. He stumbled backwards, hand to his nose. He glared at Holli, mumbling, 'You little...'
Before William could stop her, Holli stormed off. She wasn't sure where she was going, but she just needed to move. William called after her, much to the annoyance of his almost-brother. 'Let her go,' Jason murmured. Blood dripped down his nose, onto his top lip. He wiped it away with the back of his hand. 'She's just a-'
'Don't finish that sentence,' William snapped. He stood up and leaned against the tree. It took all of his self-control not to punch Jason in the stomach. -
Holli continued walking until she was sure she was out of sight from the boys, sat down against the wall and let herself cry. She was angry at herself, she was angry at Jason, her blood curled at the sight of Sebastian. She was extremely annoyed at her Mother and though she had wished it once, she didn't want her dead, and if anybody in her family had already reached their end it was likely to be Marion as she had been travelling with Sebastian. She sobbed for a little longer letting all the emotion and worry she had been holding in roll down her cheeks.
-
She eventually sat up, looking around at her surroundings. She was leaning against a white brick wall, behind the cafè. There was a dog park in front of her and a playground next to it.
William and Jason were out of sight, which relaxed her a bit. -
As she yawned she suddenly realised how tired she was. She hadn't slept for a while, and with all this drama going on she felt a heavy weight on her shoulders. William would come looking for her soon, so it would be fine if she got a little sleep. Besides, it was comfy enough here. Warm, soft grass, nice, burning sun. She lay down, closed her eyes and in seconds she was asleep.
-
Noo! You've disappeared ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜
-
(I'M SORRY I HAD TO GO TO A LESSON ðŸ˜)
She woke and rubbed her eyes, looking around her. It was dark. The sun set over the horizon, leaving a sky a lovely orange. Trying not to surrender to her fatigue once more, she sat up and dusted the dirt off her side, looking around her.
William was not around, and neither was Jason. Nobody was around, in fact. The park was empty except for her.
