So I know that I've said that I have no interest in the anime anymore, but sometimes I can't help myself and I say "okayyyy i'll watch a little."
Remember how I used to love Vegeta, then I kinda liked them, then I absolutely hated him for being a dickhole?
Well, here we go again. I feel so bad for having hated him so much. I was thinking about it, and really he has a reason to be the way he is.
He acts so bitterly with his brother because he's most likely jealous. When Tarble was little, they shipped him off to some other planet because he was weak. Vegeta had to endure all the torture and misery Frieza put him through. I could imagine how jealous Vegeta would feel if he saw his brother about thirty years later, being the happiest and friendliest thing in the world and having the love of his life beside him no matter what. Vegeta can't even have the latter of the two.
Then why he's such a dick with Goku, it's pretty obvious. At the beginning, he didn't have a very good reason to hate him. It was only because he felt Goku betrayed their race by joining in with one of the weaker species of their universe and then killing his own brother and stuff like that, and even at that time it was more that Vegeta wanted to destroy the planet than he wanted to give Goku a piece of his mind.
Later on, Vegeta felt some sort of trust in him. That began when they were on Planet Namek. Sure, he was still a major a--hole. But at that point in time it was mainly because of his want towards a strong rivalry. Just when you think he's the biggest asshat in the history of asshats, he saved Gohan's life. People usually overlook that and say "he's still a dick", but it takes someone without a heart to not save a little boy like that. Those are one of the first signs that he was beginning to change.
Later into the Namek saga when he is dying, he did that little feels scene where he cries and tells Goku that he has faith that he'll be the one to kill Frieza and s--- like that. Then he pretty much gave Goku his life story in a few minutes.
To tell the person you 'hate' about your torturous past is.. a lot, really. And to feel so much trust as to tell him that you have all this faith in him and that he's the one, that's also a lot. It was hard for Vegeta to say that because of his large ego, but he managed. Come on, how do people not notice that one key scene? That's pretty much where you realize why Vegeta was such a butthole the whole time, because he was so deep into his own angst and he just wanted to inflict the pain he had into other people. Then to see him cry, you realize that he does have some sort of heart and that he's not completely cold and cruel.
I could go on about that, but I'll stop making sense.
So then towards the end of the series, even though Goku and Vegeta become like pretty damn close, you notice that Vegeta still acts like an a--hole. And once again, he has his reason.
Goku is always given the credit in everything. He's called the best and everyone treats him like.. well, like if he's the only one that is able to save people and manage to keep everyone safe. Vegeta, with the ego problem and stuff, well, this devastates him in some way. Though he denies it, he begins to think that he is nothing compared to Goku and that he's merely worthless to everyone. That hurts him, and I could imagine that it hurts him a lot.
So he acts bitterly with Goku because he can't take the fact that he's seen as the little apprentice of some guy. At the very end of the series, there's the scene where Vegeta 'admits' that he is lower than Goku.
It's sad. Yes, half of the time Vegeta causes all the s--- they get into because of his temper. But he also helps people get out of it too. He does things and yet his attempts aren't really recognized.
So basically, Vegeta was tortured as a child and knew nothing but cruelty and violence for the majority of his young years. He learned bad habits from the people who ruled over him, and that contributed to his attitude. His pride was hurt so many times that he completely lost it a couple of times in the series. He was forced to work with the person he hated most, and he was so frowned down upon even when he became a good guy that he began to lose faith in himself a lot.
Yeah, Vegeta's another one of those character where you have to think about what they've gone through to actually understand them. He's not like Goku, whose personality doesn't have to do anything with his past. Goku has had a pretty crappy life too, but he's not aware of it so that's why he's so happy for the most part. Vegeta was traumatized by his own past, and it takes a bit of thinking to realize why he acts the way he does.
Okay, well one more thing and I'm done.
I get laughs from this, but today I thought about it too. People tend to dislike Krillin so much because he's like the most vulnerable fighter and every time he dies they always have to bring him back yet he does nothing to really contribute to the fight.
Okay, there's only one thing to this. Krillin knows for a fact that he is not strong enough to take on anybody after his fights in DB. When he fought Vegeta, he admitted in the end that he was not strong. Before even being fully aware of how strong Frieza was, he had the thought in his mind that he would not be strong enough to take him on. Yet, despite all of that, he actually goes off and risks his life to help his friends. That takes true balls, really it does.
And maybe he doesn't really get any hits or causes any damage, but during the time they were on Namek he managed to save Gohan from being killed.
It makes you think that yeah, Krillin is probably the weakest little f--- in the group. But he's actually kind of brave when you think about it.
Yeah, i'm done.
