kristine_192 NewbieSorry to break it to y'all, you did ask for my opinion and I'm not trying to be rude but I honestly don't think cheerleading is a sport. Yeah, it requires skill and ability. So does every other sport such as soccer, basketball and tennis etc. Yeah, it does require tumbling, but so does gymnastics. Yeah, you DO get injuries and other things, but guess what? So does every other sport...you get hurt and get injuries. Why, I've sprained my ankle last weekend from a soccer tournament and I once got a black eye from tennis practice and split a calf muscle in horse back riding.
Overall, cheerleading may or may not be a sport...eh, people have different opinions and my opinion is that it isn't. It's just like pole dancing or stripping as someone else said (lol).
My opinion. Don't get all !@#$%@ with me just because I expressed my opinion.
Peace. -
kristine_192 NoviceOh yeah, I forgot to add that cheerleaders can get a bad repuataion to people because they look so slutty and (beep!) in their tight little mini-skirts and uniforms that show their belly buttons :P... That's what I first thought when I saw cheerleaders but then I actually met one and their pretty nice but the others can be (beep!) (beep!) :P also, movies give cheerleaders a bad name sometimes for the nice cheerleaders.
Sorry, it has nothing to do with the topic but I just had to throw that in. -
I agree that cheerleaders get a bad reputation, from all of the things you listed above. But if cheerleading is so like other sports, then why is it not?
Also, most cheerleaders don't wear revealing outfits. It just seems that way because that's what happens in the movies and tv shows. -
kristine_192 NoviceFrom what I've seen, that wear quite revealing outfits. Some actually, I've seen wear long tights and jumpers, so not all are revealing, I must admit.
Although, I find cheerleading just jumping up and down, yelling and throwing girls in the air, doing the splits and doing all stunts. It's basically just dancing and cheering with pom poms? (some don't have pom poms, I think)
Yes, it is LIKE other sports. I still don't think it's one. Sorry, I don't think I'll change my mind about that. But if you think cheerleading is a sport, then that's just fine :D
GO WEST TIGERS!!! :P
(lol..) -
I just love how all of these sports that people aren't quite sure if it's a sport or not have a lot of people that like it and are good at it, but things that eveyrone knows is a sport everyone hates and doesn't think of. :I
-
Oh, and you can get hurt falling down stairs and it can take skill to be that unbalanced (I dunno, some people don't fall) so that could be considered a sport, but it's not. I still don't think cheerleading is a sport, but whatever.
-
I don't really think it's a sport
-
What makes something a sport? That's the real question you should ask.

Purple Cherries,
TENNIS= Something needed with strength... you need to also have good eye coordination and quick thinking. Lots of practice as well. Also it's expensive. And dangerous, just like everything in damn life. Once I received a black eye when I was competing against someone who was trying to aim the ball AT me rather than TO me...
SOCCER= Of course this one's a sport...(duh). what makes it a sport, skill, strong legs (for kicking/shooting), good eye coordination (for the ball) plenty of running
BASKETBALL= Running, strength, jumps for the shooting...and you need to learn how to take the ball off someone while their dribbling...
Basically anything including running is a sport... since when do we see cheerleader running on the sidelines? (except for their training) All cheerleaders do is yell, GO TEAM GO, C'MON TEAM!! and start to prance around like strippers. (no offence, just trying to describe my point)
If you want to find some sport which requires flexibility and dancing.....go do gymnastics or ice skating...
And for cheerleading, it CAN be considered a sport because those girls use their voices...right? their basically excersising their lungs and throats :D -
DaughterOfApollo JuniorAt my school, it is DEFINATELY NOT a sport. These cheerleaders suck and we basically only had 2 decent cheerleaders that could do backflips and stuff like that. I think if you can do that than it's consider a sport for them but not for the other ones that can't do it. Like my mom was a cheerleader and she didn't go to the same school I do and her little team thing would actually do stunts and stand on each others shoulder and other stuff like that. So my point is, if you don't do any stunts then it's not a sport but if you do, then it's a sport.
I also just hate it when people think that xc (cross country) is not a sport. It clearly is. For other sports, their punishmen is running, we do it for fun. I mean like I'd lover to see you run 8 miles without stopping and with no water breaks. -
It depends. Are you talking about competitive cheer, or sideline cheerleading? Sideline cheerleading is not a sport. That is where you are doing cartwheels and yelling at the sports teams. Competitive rather, is a sport. You have to be strong to throw girls in the air and you have to be flexible to do the splits. Tumbling is very hard. It took me 4 years to be able to do my standing round-off double back-handspring.
I agree that tv shows and movies have given cheerleaders a bad reputation but we are really nice people. We do not wear slutty uniforms. my uniform are my school colors in a skirt that fits school dress code (which means it goes down to my fingertips) and we have to wear spankies underneath so if it lifts up, it doesn't show anything. Our tops just say our school name on it. It goes past our bellybuttons. The only skin we show is our legs, arms, and neck/facial area. -
ToeSocks NewbieCheerleading is definitely a sport. It requires so much energy, flexibility, strength, and teamwork. I do realize it gets a really bad reputation because in TV the cheerleaders are blonde, dumb, and slutty.

DaughterOfApollo Junior@Toesocks what's wrong with blonde hair?! >:/
