“Why isn’t it?? Why do you need so much?? Why do you need to be so high maintenance?” She spat, glaring at him. “Can you not be happy with what you’re given?”
-
Clay flinched a little, taking a step back as guilt washed over him. “I- I’m not trying to be high maintenance, I just- I mean, have you even considered what Ithought about being married off??” He asked a bit quieter than before, his hands beginning to shake.
-
“Well, don’t you want to be a good ruler?? And your father and I obviously are- and don’t you want to make alliances with the other kingdoms? For the good of our kingdom??” She said.
-
“I do, Mom, believe me- I just, don’t want to get married to some girl I’ve never met,” Clay spoke bluntly, anger rising again. “I mean, have you even considered that I may not even like girls?!” He exclaimed, throwing his hands up in the air.
-
A disgusted look appeared on her face, glaring at him. “No! No, I haven’t considered that, because that is unacceptable,” she spat, pronouncing every syllable in the last word she spoke.
-
Clay flinched slightly at his mother’s words, exhaling shakily. “What if I did like guys? O-Or what if I just didn’t want to get married?! Why can’t you just let me make these decisions myself, it’s my f---ing life!” He shouted, his hands clenching into fists.
-
“Well, it may be your f---ing life, but every decision you make could put the thousands of lives in this kingdom in danger- do you want to be selfish??” She said angrily.
-
“How is wanting to be happy selfish?!” Clay exclaimed, glaring at his mother.
-
“Because sometimes you have some sacrifice some things for the good of the people- and that should be your priority! Not yourself,” She spat, glaring back at him.
-
Clay exhaled shakily, staring at the ground. “You’re- No, you’re right, I- I’m sorry,” he murmured, gripping his arm as his nails dug into his skin.
-
“I always am,” She said angrily. “Now, start working on those letters right now- you’re skipping training. And give me your phone- I’ll be sending someone up here to make sure you do these.”
-
“Wh- Why do you need my phone??” Clay asked, panicking a little as he pulled his phone out.
-
“So you don’t use it and you focus on making the letters,” she said, glaring at him. “Now give it to me.”
-
Clay exhaled as he quickly deleted his messages with George and silenced his notifications, turning his phone off snd handing it to his mother.
-
“Why are you so nervous to give me your phone?” His mother asked, raising an eyebrow.
