‘I-It was Chris,’ Mason said, rubbing his arm.

Her mother scoffed, shaking her head. “Of course you were with him,” she muttered, rubbing her temples.

‘Can I come in now?’ Mason asked quietly.

“Yes, get in the damn house,” Maya’s mother said, rolling her eye as she backed up. “But you’re grounded for a month, you hear me?”

‘Okay,’ Mason mumbled, averting his gaze as he walked into the house.

Maya’s mother rolled her eyes and shut the door, letting it slam against the door frame a little. “And give me your phone,” she spoke, holding out her hand.

Mason looked down. ‘F-Fine.’ He pulled out his phone and gave it to her.

“Thank you. Now, go to your room, Maya,” her mother said, snatching the phone from her daughter.

'It's Mason,' he muttered, walking off towards his room.

“Excuse me?” Maya’s mother spoke harshly, turning to glare at her daughter. “What did you just say to me?”

'M-My name,' Mason said quietly, avoiding his mother's gaze. 'It's Mason.'

“No, it’s not- It’s Maya,” her mother spoke, stepping closer to her daughter.

'I-It's Mason,' Mason said, stuffing his hands in his pockets. 'I'm a boy.'

“No, you f---ing are’t,” Maya’s mother said sternly, grabbing Maya’s arm and gripping it tight. “You were born a girl, so you are a girl. Don’t spout some “i WaS BoRn iN ThE wRoNg BoDy” bulls---.”

Mason winced, looking up at his mother. He knew he'd get in massive trouble for this, but he didn't care. He yanked his arm away. 'I'm a boy,' he repeated, 'and m-my name is Mason. I'm not a girl.'
