(oh, gosh, okay :’)
Evan had just arrived home from school, and he was checking his phone in his car. Connor hasn’t come to school for the past few days since their little date night, and it was making Evan anxious. He was typically never anxious, and the feeling was killing him. His heart leapt when he got a call from Connors number and he quickly picked it up. “Hey, where have you been?” -
"Hey, Evan- it's Hannah, Connor's mom," Hannah spoke in an anxious voice, walking out of the room she was in and shutting the door.
-
Evan’s face dropped. “Wha- where’s Connor? Hannah, you’re scaring me.”
-
"Look, don't panic, but-" Hannah exhaled, looking back at the door of the hospital room. "Connor's in the hospital. He-" She paused and let out a shaky breath, trying to keep calm. "He's uhm, he's stable, but he's been slipping in and out of consciousness. Other- other than that, he's- he's okay." She wanted to tell him the reason why Connor was in the hospital, but knew it wasn't her place to say.
-
Evan was silent for a moment, trying to wrap his head around it. “Wait- what, why? Why is he in the hospital?”
-
"I think that's something you'll have to ask Connor," Hannah spoke, looking down at the phone. She looked back up as someone called her name, sighing. "I've got to go, just wanted to call and make sure you knew. Visiting hours go till 8 pm tonight so, you should try and stop by," she spoke softly before saying goodbye and hanging up.
-
Evan threw his phone onto the center console, turning the car on again and quickly heading to the hospital. Tears had started to stream down his cheeks, and he didn’t really care to stop them. He soon arrived at the hospital, probably from driving too fast, and parked his car down the street before hopping out and rushing down. He walked inside, looking for a front desk or Hannah.
-
Hannah walked out of a patient's room and looked over, seeing Evan at the front desk interrogating the anxious boy sitting up front. She walked over and put her hand on Evan's shoulder, trying to calm him down. "Ev, hun, take a deep breath-"
-
Evan jumped, whipping around to see who it was. “What? How could I calm down when you just randomly called me from Connor’s phone and tell me he’s on the brink of f---ing death?” He said weakly, using anger as a shield to his distress. “Wh- where is he? Can I see him?”
-
"He's not on the brink of death, relax, Evan," Hannah spoke in a calm voice, gently taking Evan's hands and squeezing them for a moment. "He's just down here, in room 17. He's still unconscious, but he's fine, I promise."
-
Evan nodded, squeezing Hannah’s hands back. He immediately felt guilty, realizing he probably shouldn’t have lashed out at her like that, since she was probably just as upset as he was, just better at hiding it. He silently let go of her hands, smiling weakly at her before heading down the hall to room 17. He walked in the door, shutting it behind him and blankly staring at Connor for a moment where he laid. He couldn’t bear to take a step towards him, his feet wouldn’t let him.
Connor looked… awful. His skin was a sickly pale, and he had dark bags hanging underneath his eyes. He had bandages covering his arms, and Evan’s heart aches for what he assumed was underneath them. He had tubes and wires hooked up down his arms and chest, making him seem like a science experiment.
Tears welled up in Evan’s eyes again, streaming down his face as he walked over to the bed, sitting on a chair near it. He shakily but urgently grabbed his boyfriend’s hand, squeezing it tightly. “f---. Well, I didn’t expect this, this week,” he said weakly, not knowing particularly what to say to the unconscious body laid in front of him. “I- I don’t know, what- what happened,” he started, taking deep breaths to try and pull himself together. “But, I’m really, really sorry I wasn’t there for you. f---- were there signs? Am I that blind?” He took a particularly shaky breath, wiping his eyes with his free hand, which had been freed from the cast the day before.
“I- just, I feel like a f---ing awful boyfriend, like you deserve better- I don’t even say that I loved you, but I do, I really f---ing love you, Connor. And- and I don’t know,” he hung his head squeezing his eyes shut and wiping his eyes aggressively with the hang that wasn’t still squeezing Connor’s. -
Connor stirred awake, blinking his eyes as they adjusted to the lights. He glanced over to see Evan beside him, a small smile growing on his face. "Well, that's one way to confess your feelings. Wait till he's unconscious so he can't say anything," he said with a groggy voice, chuckling as he rested his hand on top of his boyfriend's.
-
Evan’s head snapped upright, staring at Connor, awake, for a few seconds before he leapt up, finally saying something. “Oh, f---. You’re awake?” He chuckled awkwardly, quickly wiping away the tears and jumping forward to hug his boyfriend.
-
Connor laughed, nodding. "Yeah, I'm awake, no need to be awkward about it, baby~," he said with a chuckle, hugging Evan close. He rubbed his back, exhaling softly. "If anyone should be embarrassed, it's probably me. I mean, I'm lying in a f---ing hospital bed, for Christ's sake."
-
“Mm, that’s true,” Evan said quietly, resting his head against Connor’s chest. “Why is that? What happened?”
