Ernest turned to his book again.

Mahina looked back at the oven.

"Did you sleep well?" Ernie asked softly.

Mahina nodded. ‘As well as I could’ve,’ she said quietly.

Ernest doubted that was a good sleep, but he nodded. "Fair enough."

Mahina nodded, giving a small smile.

Ernie smiled softly. "I think your food is ready now."

Mahina looked at the oven and grabbed some oven mitts, then pulled out her plate. ‘Thanks,’ she said.

"You're welcome." He grinned.

Mahina gave a smile and set her plate on the table to cool.

Ernie read more of his book.

Mahina sat next to him, resting her head on his shoulder.

Ernest let her, wrapping an arm around her.

Mahina smiled, taking a bite from her food.
