The guard left. Chester sighed and stood up. ‘I’ll handle it,’ he muttered. He bowed his head to his grandparents reluctantly. ‘Grandmother. Grandfather.’
His grandmother stomped forward and held up several newspapers. ‘What is this?! You’re not one of those homosexuals, Chester! And what are those rabbit ears?!’ She tugged on one of his bunny ears.
Chester winced, but didn’t say anything. -
Jayden's fist clenched. He knew Chester just told him that he could handle it, but he stood up anyways. His mouth felt dry immediately after he did so, wanting to sit down again, but he stepped forward. "Excuse me, sir, ma'am. I'm Jayden Celeste." He didn't bother adding that he was Chester's boyfriend, figuring they already knew and that it'd cause more trouble. "May I suggest you guys talk about this in a separate room? Without everyone here as an audience?"
-
Chester’s grandmother gritted her teeth, but threw her hands up in surrender. ‘Fine, fine! Come on, Chester,’ she said, grabbing his rabbit ear again and pulling him in tow towards the door. Chester hugged himself, but didn’t resist.
‘Have fun, Cottontail!’ Astrid called after them. -
Jayd winced, watching them leave. He wanted to follow and support Chester, but didn't want to make it worse. He glared at Astrid before sitting down. He looked at Maeve. "No offense, but your grandparents are terrifying."
"None taken." She muttered. -
The old woman pulled him into the hallway, slammed the door, then resumed her yelling. ‘Honestly, Chester! First your parents and now this?! You’re lucky nobody’s found out about what you did to my daughter, or about your goddamned mental health! Our family would be ruined, I tell you!’
Chester looked down at the ground. ‘I’m pretty sure they can still hear you,’ he mumbled.
‘Does it look like I give a crap?! With you it’s been problem after problem, and now look at you! A homosexual bunny with the a height of 5 foot!’
‘It’s temporary,’ Chester mumbled, eyes filled with tears. -
Jayden could hear the yelling, but nothing in particular. He stared at his fork, not having an appetite.
"It better be temporary!" She continued, eyes seemingly scanning him from top to bottom with a scowl. -
Chester looked up at her. ‘I-It is, I promise. Please don’t tell anybody,’ he said quietly.
His grandmother scowled. ‘I would never! You’re an embarrassment, Chester! I’d never want people to know you’re my grandson.’ -
Jayden looked at Maeve. "Is Chester going to be ok by himself, or should I intervene?" He asked quietly. He felt bad about leaving Chester alone with them, but also knew he said he could handle it.
-
Maeve sighed. ‘You should probably step in. He’s never had a good relationship with our grandparents.’
Chester looked down, not responding. -
She didn't have to tell him twice. He stood up. "Ok." He walked to the door, opening it and stepping out of it to see Chester's eyes welled up with tears. "I can force them to leave if you'd like." He whispered, wrapping him in a tight hug.
-
Chester whimpered, nodding and burying his face in Jayden’s shirt.
His grandma looked at them with disgust. ‘You little brat, don’t you turn your back on me!’ -
Jayden held him close, looking up at the old lady. "That's enough berating Chester. Now, I would recommend you leave before I call the guards. Trespassing is a crime, you know."
-
Chester’s grandma scowled. ‘You wouldn’t dare, you little-‘
‘Lottie, let me handle this,’ the old man said, who’d been standing off to the side quietly. Lottie rolled her eyes and stepped back. -
Jayd had a defiant glare in Chester's grandma's direction before he turned his attention to the man.
-
The old man grabbed Chester’s wrist and yanked him away from Jayden. ‘Look at me, you little brat.’ Chester whimpered, but turned his gaze to his grandfather, who slapped him across the face. ‘You’re a disappointment to your family.’
