Jayd smiled back, but now a question was nagging in the back of his head, making his smile falter slightly. "Are you happy?" He asked quietly.
-
Chester froze. He wasn’t expecting that. He looked down and nestled into Jayden’s arms, not responding. So long as Jayden was happy, he was happy, but a lot had happened…
-
Jayd's smile completely disappeared. "Chester?" He asked quietly. He didn't want to end up in a relationship where only one of them was happy.
-
Chester didn’t respond. He’d promised not to lie to Jayden again. His arms tightened around his boyfriend, and he buried his face in Jayden’s chest.
-
Jayden held him in his arms. "You can say no." He mumbled. "Say whatever you need to. I won't get offended."
-
Chester shook his head. He looked up at Jayden, sadness in his eyes. ‘I-I’m happy,’ he said weakly. ‘When I’m with you. I-It’s just..’
-
Jayd frowned, grabbing Chester's hand, loose enough that he could pull away if he wanted to. "You just what?" He asked, voice hardly above a whisper, not wanting his voice to wobble and crack.
-
Chester’s eyes welled with tears at the look on Jayden’s face. He buried his face in Jayden’s chest. ‘I-I’m scared,’ he said, almost whimpering.
-
Jayden bit his lip at Chester's eyes welling up with tears. "Hey, it's ok, I'm not upset with you." He murmured, pulling Chester closer. "Scared of what?"
-
Chester let himself be pulled closer. He wrapped his arms around Jayden’s torso, sniffling. ‘Of Astrid. The board. Your parents. The demons I see at night,’ Chester whispered, voice wobbly. He whimpered, burying his face in Jayden’s shirt. ‘I’m scared something will go wrong and I won’t be able to help you.’
-
Jayden sighed softly, kissing the top of Chester's head as he thought of an answer. "I..." He paused, sighing. Goddamn it, comfort him! "I'm scared of those things too." He admit quietly. "But you don't have to be scared of not being able to help me. I can defend myself pretty damn well, and I'll try to do the same for you, love."
-
Chester looked up at him. He wiped his eyes furiously, trying not to cry. ‘You shouldn’t have to be,’ he said quietly, sniffling. ‘I should be able to defend you, not cry like a bunny when this is happening to you.’
-
"Hey, it's alright. I don't blame you for anything, least of all not being able to protect me. Things happen. And I don't blame you for crying like a bunny. This stuff has gone wrong for you too, and I haven't been good at helping you with it, either."
-
Chester looked up at him, bottom lip trembling. ‘A-Are you sure? I’m so weak, did you see me that first time Astrid yelled at me? A-And around the board? And I was a f---ing mess when I woke up, and I’m crying right now-‘
-
"I'm sure. Chester Jackson, love of my life, I'm not upset with you for crying. Anyone else would've crumbled in your position, myself included. You're the strongest, bravest person I know." He held Chester's head in his hands.
