Most kids had finished their food by now.
Hazel's stepmother stood. 'Before you leave, your father and I have an announcement to make,' she said, grinning. -
Everyone went quiet, looking at Hazel's stepmom.
-
'Well, we're getting married,' her stepmother said, looking at Mr Jasper. He smiled.
A silence fell over the table. Lilla was frowning. Jackie's face was of pure shock. Hazel fiddled with her hands. Ally babbled something. -
"Ally, be quiet." Lilla mumbled, and Jackie looked at Lilla.
"Oh be nice Lilla." Jackie said quietly. -
Tyron looked a little sad. 'But... but what about mum?' he asked, looking at his dad.
'Tyron-' Mr Jasper started.
'Yeah,' said one of the younger girls. 'What about Aunty Sophie?' -
Theo grimaced, knowing the conversation wouldn't end well no matter what Mr. Jasper said.
"She... Uhm..." Hazel's dad said, unable to think of something that would convince the whole family. -
'You know she's gone, Milla,' Hazel said coldly. 'We all know she's gone.'
'Hazel-' Jackie said.
'There's no use pretending she's still with us,' Hazel said, raising her voice a little.
'Hazel, stop it!' Lilla exclaimed. -
Theo looked at Hazel. "Calm down." He said quietly. "You're making Lilla upset."
-
Hazel balled her fists. 'It's unfair!' she shouted, tears welling in her eyes.
'Hazel, go to your room!' Mr Jasper snapped.
Hazel slammed her fists against the table and stormed off. Jackie moved next to Lilla and wrapped his arm around her shoulder. -
Theo looked around before excusing himself and walking upstairs and into Hazel's room, sitting down next to her, unsure if she wanted to be left alone or not.
-
Hazel was sat on her bed, face buried in her hands and knees cuddled to her chest.
-
Theo didn't say anything, worried he'd upset her or embarrass her.
-
Hazel felt his weight on her bed, but didn't say anything, just sobbed quietly.
-
Theo noticed a piece of hair in the front of Hazel's face, and he tucked it out of the way gently, still not saying anything.
-
Hazel calmed down a little and wipped her eyes with the back on her hand. 'Sorry,' she mumbled.
