Jaime woke up that morning, not looking forward to the day that day. His parents were going away for three months for a vacation. A vacation only for them. The last time he had gone on a trip with them that hadn't been for things like weddings and funerals and such was ten years ago.
And now they were having someone stay for these three months. Ethel, they said her name was. Sounded like the name of some calm old lady.
"She'll be here in ten minutes!" his mom called up to him. "You'd better be ready by then!"
Jaime rolled his eyes. He wouldn't. He would take as long as he could. -
Ethel hummed along with the music in her car as it blasted through the radio. She always prefereed classical music over all the heavy metal the other kids at school listened to.
"Well, are you excited for this?” Ethel’s mother asked, a big grin plastered across her face. "With the way you are, you’ll have no trouble with stirring away all of the negativity this troublemaker will cause!”
“Indeed, mother. Another win for the Strattle family!” Ethel declared, a small smile gracing her bubblegum pink lips. "Did you remember to start my driving time?"
"Of course, my dear! It won’t be long before you get your license.” Her mother smiled at her solemnly. “You’re growing up so fast. It’s like I’m losing track of time.” -
Jaime laid in bed for about five minutes, before finally getting up. He went into the bathroom and decided to take a shower while coming up with various ways he could inconvenience everyone, embarrass his parents, and so forth. She would probably arrive while he was still in the shower.
-
Ethel pulled up to his house a short time after. When she stepped out of the car, her eyes darted towards each and every aspect of the house she could lay her eyes on. It seemed to follow the neighborhood rules she researched on the internet for this neighborhood. No trash was scattered across the yard, and the grass was cut and smelled fresh. Good, at least they were able to keep up their appearances when it comes to their house.
"Have fun, sweetie! Make sure to work hard!” Her mom screamed out of the rolled down window, waving her hands in support. Ethel slid her glasses up her nose and nodded curtly to her mother.
"Indeed I shall! There isn’t any need to worry about me. This rowdy boy shall be in tip-top shape in no time flat!” Ethel declared loudly, waving her hands back at her mom who blew her a kiss goodbye.
Ethel turned back around and walked up the porch to the front door. She slowly knocked her knuckles against the door and then stood up straight, looking down at her tie to make sure it was fixed before blankly staring at the door again. -
The door was opened by a blonde woman in her 40s
by the name of Margaret. "Hello," she said. "You must be Ethel, come in."
The house was rather large. In the living room there were multiple suitcases and bags ready to leave for her and her husband.
As she led Ethel through the kitchen, she noticed the absence of her son. Shaking her head and muttering about his tardiness, she turned back to Ethel. "Your room will be upstairs, second door on the left. Does it sound okay if we send your payment weekly straight to your card?" -
"That sounds delightful.” Ethel said, her polite smile still stretched across her face. "Is your son busy taking a shower? Hygiene is quite important, so would it be fine if we excused his tardiness just this once?”
-
"I told him to be ready by now," she said.
Just then, the shower turned off. A few minutes later, Jaime came down with nothing but a towel around his waist. As he would normally, but he knew his mom would be fuming. -
Ethel's eyes practically popped out of her head. A shrill screech floated to the top of her throat and out of her mouth as she pointed a shaky finger at the sopping wet boy.
"WHAT IN THE NAME OF THOMAS EDISON? CLEARLY, THERE MUST BE SOME RULES AGAINST THIS!” Ethel screamed. She zipped open her bag and desperately search for a hoodie of some sort. -
Jaime smirked at Ethel, and raised an eyebrow, wondering why she was grabbing a hoodie.
Meanwhile, mother glared deadly sharp daggers at him. She was this close to grabbing him by the ear and scolding him. -
Ethel grabbed the sleeve of one of her oversized hoodies and, with all the might she had in her small body, threw it at Jaime.
It landed on the floor right beneath his feet. Ethel took a mental note to go to the gym more often.
“Put that on! Immediately!” Ethel hollered, her face the color of a ripe tomato ready for the picking. Steam could've been comically pouring out of her ears had this been a Saturday morning cartoon. "It must strictly forbidden to be naked in front of a stranger, of all things! Goodness gracious, my heart.” -
"I'm not naked," Jaime pointed out. "Well, not exactly."
That was it. His mother stalked over to him and grabbed him by the ear, pulling him into the other room.
"What do you think you're doing?!" His mother half screeched half hisses at him. "Do you know how much you are embarrassing me?!"
Jaime rolled his eyes. That was exactly why he did it. He never got in trouble because it was for his own good. His parents were just too vain. He would get into trouble because it reflected on them, not because he needed to learn not to do it to be a better human being.
"I do this all the time," he replied. "Why should I change because she's here?"
After a few more moments of bickering, they went back into the kitchen. Jaime picked up the hoodie and started walking towards Ethel without putting it on. -
Ethel let out a high pitched squeak and took two large steps away from Jaime. What on earth had she signed up for? He had a point, he wasn’t naked. But what if the towel fell? Where was the decency she had expected of this fine-looking household! Her right eye twitched in frustration. No, she was determined to stay in this house and turn this ruffian into a polite, well-mannered man who didn’t run around with nothing but a large cloth for clothes!
She took a deep breath and approached Jaime with her hands on her hips and fierce eyes.
"Listen up, embarrassing your mother who gave birth to you is a no go in my book! She bought you clothes to wear, and wear them you shall.” She turned to his mom. “I promise, I’ll make this troublemaker into a rule follower! Mark my words.”
