Ophelia took the papers and pen, an eyebrow raised in suspicion. ``Is that really it?`` She asked, turning to Matthew.
-
(He never gave her the papers)
"What do you think?" Matthew inquired.
In reality he wanted her to be indebted to him, to the Mafia.
And also by signing the papers, by promising to not tell the police she would show that her sense of justice was less than her sense of freedom for herself.
And if she broke the contract, she was dead. -
( oh- forget that part then :') )
``Sure, I uh, I guess I'll sign it,`` Ophelia replied, running a hand through her hair. -
Matthew raised a single eyebrow. She was hesitating.
"Apparently you need more time to think," he concluded. He wanted either a yes or a no answer. "It's completely up to you. Choose the law, choose justice, or choose your freedom."
He stood up. "I'll leave you to it." -
Ophelia nodded, resting her hands in her lap. One the one hand, she could get her freedom from being held hostage. On the other hand, it wouldn't be the right thing to do, since she wouldn't be able to tell the cops, or anyone for that matter. God, why does being a good person have to be so hard??
-
Matt walked out of the bedroom, locking the door behind him.
"Well?" Theo asked. He was holding a stack of papers.
Matthew looked at the white sheets in his hand. "What's that?" he asked, gesturing to the pile.
"Oh this?" Theo asked as if he was just waiting for Matt to ask. "Well this thirty-page document is the contract -"
"No it isn't," Matthew said.
Theo's expression dropped. "It isn't?"
"Too long."
"But Matt," Theo pleaded, "This was the shortest I could manage to get it to!"
"Well then make it shorter," Matthew said. "I want a maximum of six pages." -
Ophelia looked around the room, crossing her legs on the bed where she sat. She fidgeted with the sleeve of her sweater, her mind swirling with indecisive thoughts.
-
Theo looked appalled at the notion. He walked into the other room muttering to himself. He was a very educated man.
After awhile Matthew told Nick, "Go check on her. Make sure she's not tearing up the room or trying to escape, or anything."
Nick nodded and went upstairs. -
Ophelia paced the room, searching for any way she could escape.
-
Nicko popped his head in. "Hey," he said. "You okay?"
-
``Hm? Yeah, as okay as someone who's just been kidnapped can be,`` Ophelia said sarcastically, looking over to Nick.
-
"Trust me, it could've been way worse," Nick said.
-
``So, when can I leave? Once I sign the papers?`` Ophelia asked, crossing her arms.
-
"Exactly."
-
``Okay, but I really feel like there's some sort of catch.``
