Ruby laughed, snorting. "Ok, your turn to ask me." She said
-
"Truth or dare?" he asked, enjoying the friendly atmosphere surrounding them. His phone dinged, but he paid it no mind.
-
"Truth this time," Ruby said.
-
"Who's your crush?" Azure asked, smirking. "Only if you have one, of course."
-
Ruby immediately felt herself getting hotter and hotter. She knew that her face was bright red. "I- I- um..." She stuttered over her words. How could she tell Azure that her crush... was him? She knew that he only liked her as a friend and that if she told him, it would make their friendship awkward. But she just decided to tell him. "You..." She mumbled, trailing off and looking down at her mug of coffee that sat on her lap.
-
Azure patted her on the shoulder as a sign of friendship, clearly eager to put that behind them. Her words were still bustling around in his mind…
"Your turn," he told her. "You can ask me now!" he said brightly, not seeming to realize that he’d said just about the same thing twice. -
Ruby was too miserable to think straight at the moment, so the only thing that she could ask Azure was, "Who's your crush?"
-
Azure shrugged. "I don’t have one at the moment. Truth or dare, Ruby?"
-
(He will fall in wuv wif her eventually. uωu ))
-
Ruby felt like she was going to burst at any moment. She faked a 'ding' from her phone and picked it up to read a 'text from her mom.' "Oh, my mom needs help making dinner. I- it was fun hanging out with you Azure, I hope we can do it again sometime..." Ruby said as she gently pushed Azure through the front door and closed it once he was out. She immediately ran to the couch and jumped onto it, tears now flowing down her cheeks. Small sobs sounded from her throat as she sat there.
-
Azure looked down guiltily. "Well, alright. Bye, then," he said, but he was already out the door. Did I do something wrong? he wondered. Glumly, he walked away, the weather shifting to his mood; once nice, sunny and warm, now cold and desolate. He wished he'd brought an umbrella. Raindrops pattered down to the ground, making everything appear shiny and nicely washed.
-
Ruby stayed on her couch for about an hour until the front door opened. "Hi, honey! I'm home early today; the diner didn't have much business- oh my goodness, dear, are you ok?" Ruby's mother asked as she hurried over to her daughter's side. Ruby sat up but looked down, and only mumble, "I'm fine..."
-
Dejectedly, Azure walked home grimly as the weather seemed to punish him, the clouds moving with him and showering rain on him.
-
It was the next day. Ruby’s tears had dried and she was walking into school with earbuds in, listening to her music.
-
Azure was almost scared to show his face at school for fear that Ruby would look away from him if he tried to make eye contact. "Listen," he would say, trying to apologize, and Ruby would just turn and walk the other way. No, he couldn’t bear the thought.
But nevertheless, Azure got out of bed and found the courage to walk to school.
