We're going off of the basic concept in the tv show called Highlander.
The world has immortals roaming about, but "in the end, there can be only one," meaning one immortal.
In order for an immortal to be killed their head must be severed from their body. Then the immortal who killed them gains their experience, skills, and so on (immortals DO NOT have magic powers or anything along those lines).
The beheading of an immortal is usually done by another immortal by use of a sword.
This does not mean that all immortals are rivals. In the end they will be, but until then, some befriend other immortals.

But there are immortals who have made their sole purpose to kill every immortal they encounter so that they will be the One.
Holy ground, churches and the like, is a sanctuary for any immortal. Blood cannot be shed there.
There's no rhyme or reason to who becomes an immortal. You just die and wake up as one. Others just die and don't become immortal.
Almost every immortal (unless they've just become one, of course) has had to move to different countries. You have an eternity to live, and plus sometimes you get yourself into so much trouble that you have to move. Mortals have no knowledge of the immortal world, so of course, they don't understand when they see someone chopping someone else's head off.
Immortals do their absolute best to keep their world away from mortals. Otherwise chaos could ensue.
Again, in the end, there can be only one.

I forgot to mention! When an immortal is beheaded by another immortal, the one that killed consumes the decapitated's head. The older the soul, the more "powerful" it is.
