"Oh.." Turner muttered, looking away from her. “Who would get hurt, though?”
-
"You," Callyn said quietly. "I know I like you. I don't know if I love you. I don't even know what it's supposed to feel like when you love someone. But from experience, whenever someone cares about someone more than the other, the relationship falls apart." It had been that way with her father, her mother, and her ex.
-
Turner winced, knowing that he probably loved her more than she liked him.
"W-well, what exactly do you feel like? Any butterflies? O-oh, or is your heart beating faster than usual?" Hope and shyness forced themselves into his voice, making him stutter. It was an honor that Callyn at least felt something towards him, but it was probably not what he felt towards her. "For me, I seem to get both butterflies and a quick heart. But that isn’t all I get. Sometimes I get flashes of what my mind figures is the future. Such as, and don't get freaked out, what life would be like if we were together. If we got married and had..." He trailed off and coughed into his hand awkwardly. "..duplicates." -
Callyn laughed a little. "Children isn't a bad word, Turner," she said.
"I do get those feelings and fantasies. But the thing is those things happened with any guy I had a crush on."
"But," she continued, "I do feel different with you. It feels...better. I don't know how to describe it." -
"Better..? As in fluttery heart and blushing better?"
-
"I don't know," Callyn said. "I can't figure out my own feelings."
-
"I understand. If you want, I can give you some time to figure out your feelings?" Turner suggested.
-
She didn't say anything, just nodded.
The next few weeks flew by. Only a couple weeks after that baking incident, many of Callyn's bones healed.
She was now out of her wheelchair. All she needed to walk right now was a cane since her right leg was still damaged. But the doctors said that she was recovering splendidly and that in a few months she wouldn't need the cane at all. -
Turner had stopped talking about his love for her entirely. He would care for her, but stay silent most of the time unless a conversation was started up by Callyn. He still cheered her on, though.
When the doctors announced Callyn free of her wheelchair, Turner was ecstatic for his friend. He would still be worried about Callyn, though. Whenever she got up from a chair, Turner rushed to her side to help her go wherever she needed to go. -
"Turner I'm fine," Callyn laughed as he helped her out of yet another chair. "They taught me how to sit and stand with a cane."
-
"But- But- still! I will not allow you to put yourself in a dangerous situation, no matter how harmless it may seem." Turner huffed defiantly.
-
"It's not dangerous if I know how to handle myself," she said.
-
Turner raised an eyebrow.
“The strongest of the swimmers get taken away in a riptide. They knew how to handle themselves, but they still got taken into the sea.” -
"Well, lucky for you I'm not going near any riptides anytime soon," Callyn said. "Look, what I'm trying to say is that you don't always need to be my hero. I can take care of myself, I've been doing it for most of my life. The only reason I'm not at home right now is because you wouldn't let me out of the house."
-
Turner coughed and averted his eyes to one of the pieces of furniture he had in his house. He knew Callyn was right. Maybe he was being a tad bit overprotective. She is her own person, so she had a right to go wherever and do what she pleased.
“True, true," Turner muttered.
