Elizabeth heard a gentle reply outside the hut and trembling, she answered, "Yes...I think so."
-
Annie breathed a sigh of relief at the responding voice. It was high-pitched and uncertain- a young child, like she'd thought.
"What are you doing all alone?" she asked quietly. She was fairly certain she already knew the answer, though the idea that even the youngest residents of this world would turn on each other was absolutely horrifying, and the images the thought put in her mind made her shiver. -
"Everyone's gone mad," Elizabeth said. "They're killing each other. If I stayed with anyone, they'd kill me too! It's the only way I can stay safe."
She found herself opening up to the gentle voice outside of the hut. Could someone that sounded so kind really be evil? -
Sora decided to investigate. She climbed on the roof and carefully hung upside down .
-
"I'm sorry." Annie mumbled, and she was quiet for a while. What can you say under these circumstances? Her knees were growing stiff from crouching, and she sat down in the patch of lush grass she had created. "How old are you?"
-
There was a moment of silence as Elizabeth counted. "Seven," she replied. "What about you?"
-
A loud booming sound in the distance reminded Annie of their circumstances, and she thought twice about what she was doing. The little voice that proclaimed "seven" convinced her not to think again.
"I'm seventeen." She responded, almost whispering now, and snuck a little closer to the wall of vines, setting her ear against it. "Do you have anyone here?" -
"No," Elizabeth responded, the vines easing a little bit, allowing a few more cracks to appear. "Is there anyone else with you?"
-
Annie shook her head, unsure if the child could even see her.
"No. But I can hear people nearby." She bit her bottom lip, weighing her options, knowing already what she was going to do. There really was only one option she'd be able to live with later. "You should come with me. My house is a little ways off. You'll be safer with me." -
Elizabeth hesitated. The booms were getting closer, meaning that the kids who were definitely murderers would be here soon. This person wasn't trying to hurt her...yet.
The vines slipped away and the little girl nodded fearfully. "Okay, I'll come." -
Smiling the most reassuring smile one that had no hope could muster, Annie took the little girl's hand and gently tugged her toward the house. She was already doubting herself- what kind of trouble was this going to cause her? Being responsible for another person? She was afraid as she led the girl down the path of grass, toward the downpour over her home. In life, she'd barely been able to keep her own head above the water, but she supposed it was it different here. Maybe she'd be alright. Maybe they both would.
-
Elizabeth looked at the house and let out a little gasp. It was so pretty, she'd never seen anything like it.
"You have a pretty mind," Elizabeth said. -
"Uh.. thank you." Annie murmured, taken off guard, as they approached the front door and the path of grass they'd followed dissolved into nothing. As another explosion rocked the landscape, she flinched and ducked through the front door, pulling the girl in behind her and locking the door.
As the two hit the hard wood floor, decorated with a bright floral rug, the exterior of the house began to warp, groaning as it slowly shifted into the form of countless wooden javelins protruding from the base of the house without a conscious thought. -
Elizabeth flinched at the loud noise, trembling as the earth shook. Why did people have to kill each other? Why couldn't they just get along?
She had covered the two of them with thick vines, which receded as she sat up and looked around. -
Looking around with the unfamiliar lens of having brought a new person into your home, there were several things Annie noticed that had been nothing but background details before. Her family photos, hanging from the wall, were all blurry around the faces. Even her own picture. The number of stairs leading to the second story changed from time to time, as if she couldn't commit to keeping anything the same for long. The pleasant scent wafting in from the kitchen was completely foreign. She'd been aiming for the scent of freshly baked bread. She again forced herself not to think about the things she was beginning to forget.
"Um. I don't think I asked you what your name is?" she spoke too loudly, trying to distract herself from her thoughts.
